Last week, we had the opportunity to bring to the beautiful in Peterborough for a Friday evening meetup followed by a two-day masterclass. Housed in a former swimming pool, the Guild is one of those special places that feels immediately full of creativity, history, and community.
From the moment we arrived, we were met with an incredibly warm welcome. Over two intensive days, participants immersed themselves in throwing (clockwise direction!), trimming, carving, and sanding porcelain, learning not only techniques but also the patience and sensitivity that underpin Jun’s practice.
One of the greatest joys of these programmes is bringing together people united by a shared passion for clay, and witnessing the connections and conversations that emerge across cultures and languages.
A very special thank you to Karina for taking such wonderful care of us throughout the weekend and for opening her home (and introducing her cats) to us. And to Kendra, whose apple fritters have undoubtedly set a new standard. 🍎✨

We had the privilege of presenting a selection of ’ works in the beautiful chadō (Japanese tea ceremony) room at the JCCC. Guests were invited to remove their shoes, step onto the tatami, and experience Jun’s ceramics up close.
Jun shared two presentations throughout the evening. The first, introducing his artistic practice, led to an engaged discussion about his approach to making. Later, in an impromptu conversation, Jun and tea lover explored the role of the chawan (tea bowl) in tea ceremony and the thoughtful care that goes into hosting.
In chanoyu, the chawan is much more than a vessel for tea. Carefully chosen by the host with the guest and occasion in mind, it becomes an expression of hospitality and a bridge between host and guest through shared appreciation and presence.

These moments remind me why I care so deeply about creating opportunities for cultural exchange through ceramics — bringing people together through objects that carry both artistic expression and human connection. ✨

We are delighted to present a small collection of works by Japanese ceramic artist, including sake cups, pourers, and chawan (tea bowls), during his first visit to Canada.
✨ What makes this event especially unique is the opportunity to experience Jun’s work within the chadō (Japanese tea ceremony) room — a space designed to strip away the distractions of the modern world and foster introspection.

This is a rare opportunity to meet Jun in person, learn more about his practice, and view a selection of his handmade ceramic works. A limited number of pieces will be available for purchase.

The exhibition will be displayed in the tatami area of the tea room, which requires visitors to remove their shoes and step up into the space. We will gladly make accommodations for anyone unable to access this area, so that all visitors can comfortably view the works.

This will be Jun Matsumura’s only public event during his Toronto visit, making it a particularly special opportunity to encounter both the artist and his work in an intimate setting. We look forward to welcoming you.
Having the opportunity for to share his practice, and in turn learning about the context, work, and ideas behind each artist’s practice at the Harbourfront Centre, created such a rich and fruitful dialogue. There was also plenty of curiosity and exchange around the similarities and differences between ceramics in Japan and Canada — from relationships with galleries, to favourite tools (tungsten carbide!). And thanks for all the great recommendations for the best places to eat.
One of the greatest joys of bringing artists together across cultures is creating space for these kinds of conversations and connections. It was inspiring to witness the generosity, curiosity, and openness with which everyone shared their experiences and perspectives.
A heartfelt thank you to artists for spending time with us and sharing your work so openly. And a special thank you to Janna Hiemstra for making this meaningful exchange possible.
Today, everyone had the opportunity to work with porcelain, and almost all the participants challenged themselves to throw the Japanese way — in a clockwise direction. It was wonderful to see everyone embracing a different approach and pushing themselves outside their comfort zones.
Thank you to Jun and all the participants for such a fun and inspiring day of learning. Now we wait for these thickly thrown pieces to dry… tomorrow, we carve!

This June, I’m honoured to be hosting Japanese ceramic artist Jun Matsumura for two masterclasses: one at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, and one with FUSION / Kawartha Potters Guild in Peterborough, Ontario.
Jun is a highly accomplished ceramic artist from Japan, known for using wheel-throwing and carving to create refined and experimental forms, moving between functional ware and sculpture.
I first met Jun in Hong Kong, where I invited him to lead demos and masterclasses at LUMP Studio. From the beginning, I was struck not only by the originality of his work, but also by his openness and generosity in sharing his process. It was a meaningful experience for our community then, and it feels very special to now bring him to Ontario.
Both workshops are now sold out, and I’m deeply grateful for the strong response — thank you to everyone who signed up.
We’re hoping to create another opportunity during his visit for more people to meet Jun and experience his work in person. More to come soon.
