It’s been almost a week since ’s Hideaway Retreat, and I’m still in awe of how special it was. Here are some of my favorite moments on stage (from the clips I’ve found so far):

1. “It Don’t Matter” — turning musical hiccups into magic 🤩
2. Singing “Both Sides Now” with Jacob at the piano… and trying to calm myself.
3. “Here Comes the Sun” and how cozy and grounded it felt!
4. Chris and Jacob improvising and completely going at it! Forgot the name of the song.
5. Finale “Let It Be” — the joy, and the realization of how incredible the week had been.

Other moments I won’t forget:

- The afterglow of “Wild Mountain Thyme” after the night 3 concert
- Becca and Jacob’s haunting arrangement of “As” (sorry no video, but I’m sure someone has it!)
- A quick world rhythm lesson from Barak at the dinner
- A quick lunchtime songwriting lesson from dodie (I did my homework and finished my 1st lyrics!)
- Teaching harmony classes and getting everyone to sing minor 9ths… and watching everyone’s eyes light up!
- A 2am song circle with 30+ souls gathered in the hotel driveway. The adrenaline rush afterwards… and no sleep 😵‍💫

These memories feel like something I’ll return to whenever I feel down. There’s many more, but for now this is what I can remember.

To the musicians🎶 - thanks for coming to my classes, asking such thoughtful questions, and singing wild dissonant voicings with me. I learned so so much through teaching! 🤓

And to Jacob - thank you for your warmth, trust, and imagination... You have a way of drawing out truth in everyone around you, and it was a privilege to witness and be a part of that. 😊

Super excited to be giving a seminar in Seoul🇰🇷 next week on reharmonization, voicing, voice leading, arranging, and improvisation, with a special focus on Jacob Collier’s harmonic structures and their historical roots, especially through the lens of Keith Jarrett, Clare Fischer, and Take 6. The more I explored those earlier voices, the more his harmony started to feel different.

I feel this topic doesn’t often get talked about in jazz education, but to me, it’s at the heart of how we understand and feel harmony. I’ll be sharing some early ideas from the book I’ve been working on, with a focus on how we learn and internalize harmony, drawing from pedagogy and psychology.

Big thanks to and, brilliant educators who helped make this seminar happen! We’ll be sitting down for a conversation to explore different perspectives on harmony and production, from the eyes of a producer, educator, and performer. I’m really looking forward to that as well! Come hang with us 😀

Here’s ‘Yesterday’ by The Beatles—arguably one of the most universally relatable songs ever. Reharming is so much more fun when the melody practically sings itself... what a brilliant song.

Here’s a harmonic improvisation using Pianoteq 8’s newly released ‘Shigeru Kawai SK-EX’ model. Improvisation, to me, feels like singing the many contrapuntal melodies within a chord progression. The joy is in wandering aimlessly and freely, yet somehow finding direction in tonality.

If you know me, I don’t usually do ads or sponsored posts, but this was an exception. I absolutely fell in love with the piano the moment I heard it. Its depth, realism, and unmatched singing quality resonate deeply with my love for harmony and counterpoint… I’m thrilled to partner with to share something I truly believe in.

Any day posts a vocal arrangement is a good day for harmony and transcription 🥳 Dominant chords with major 7s are the best.

In honor of the Olympics, here’s ‘Fields of Gold’🏅(Sting) with lazy chords and compulsive voice leading. Been enjoying reharmonizing songs that have beautiful melody and lyrics.

Pop quiz: Where’s the modulation? 🤓

I have a few more openings in my studio, DM for lessons 😵‍💫
