The gold threads running through the work are in fact very fine gold gilded paper sections. The trial and error process to understand how to gild papers less than a millimeter wide took an age, but we got there in the end.

With each paper layer (this piece consists of several laminated paper sections), I adjust the cut settings of the laser machine in order to achieve just the right tones of ivory when it is stacked and assembled.

I’ve been pushing the boundaries of materials to a point that I didn’t know until a few days ago if finishing this piece was even possible. The combination of motifs, scale, 24ct gold, and papers results in something gorgeously decadent but so very difficult to work with.
