Flower photography has never really been my genre… but sometimes the light makes the decision for you. Early morning sun streaming through the window fell perfectly on this plant sitting on the coffee table. He was deep in that world, and I did not want to disturb it. A notebook open, a pen moving, a cup of coffee cooling beside him, and soft window light shaping the moment. I stood nearby waiting for my own coffee and quietly made this photograph without engaging because anything more would have changed the mood entirely.

I was working away in my studio getting used to the new Fuji XE5 connected to my studio flashes. I needed to shoot some practice images and no one was around to model for me. I suggested the idea to Leica my furry partner in crime who was curled up on a couch. She lazily opened one eye in response to my suggestion before showing her enthusiasm by going back to sleep. Desperate for a subject I grabbed any old camera from my cabinet and plopped it onto the table. As I worked to compose the scene and refine the light I marvelled at my model.
This 1956 Yashica‑A is one of the cameras that helped introduce everyday photographers to medium‑format film. It was Yashica’s entry‑level twin‑lens reflex, built with a simple Yashikor 80mm lens and a whisper quiet leaf shutter. It wasn’t meant to be fancy — it was meant to be practical. That affordability helped Yashica grow into a major Japanese camera maker. Today, the A is my model for a still life but it also proved to be a model for many cameras that followed.

There’s something about 590nm infrared that sits in a sweet spot most people don’t expect the first time they see it. This was shot along the Alouette River in Pitt Meadows on a clear afternoon, and what you’re seeing is exactly what drew me to the 590nm conversion in the first place… colour.
At 720nm, infrared goes almost entirely monochromatic. The foliage goes white, the sky goes dark, and you’re essentially working in black and white with a very particular tonal quality. Beautiful in its own right, but it’s a single-note song.
Drop down to 590nm and something different happens. The chlorophyll response is still there — those trees are glowing white because living foliage reflects infrared light intensely — but the sky retains real colour. That deep blue you’re seeing isn’t a channel swap or a Hue/Saturation slider. It’s what the sensor recorded when the longer visible wavelengths were still allowed in. The water holds it too, that cool steel-blue reflection that would simply disappear into grey at 720nm.
The result is a photograph that reads almost like a winter scene… but the leaves are full and the mountains are green in the background. It’s a kind of beautiful contradiction that only infrared can produce.
The lone bench on the far bank didn’t hurt either.

It was Saturday morning. I decided to head out for a hike. The day was what pilots call “severe clear” … a cloudless blue sky with visibility that seems to stretch forever. The sun was already casting that harsh, flat light that says put the camera away … there’s nothing worth photographing right now.
I was only a couple of blocks from home when it clicked … harsh midday light is the enemy of conventional photography, but it’s exactly what infrared craves. I turned around, grabbed the Full Spectrum Fuji X100T and headed back.
Back on the trail, I found myself stopping constantly … lifting the camera, checking the viewfinder, watching the world transform into something unrecognizable. Foliage burns white. Water goes dark and glassy. Dead trees take on a strange sculptural weight. It’s a light spectrum completely invisible to the human eye, and the camera reveals it like a secret the landscape has been keeping all along.
This beaver pond has probably looked this way for decades … slowly reclaiming the trees, filling in the low ground. In infrared, it looks like something from another world entirely.

The train station in our little village still has its old schedule board on the wall. Chalk on black. Eastbound and Westbound. Due times and arrivals.
It’s easy to walk past it. But stop for a moment and think about what it meant. Before roads connected the Fraser Valley, the railroad was the lifeline. Settlers depended on it. Farmers shipped grain and produce on it. Families reunited because of it. Commerce existed because of it.
Fort Langley’s story is usually told through the fur trade and the Gold Rush… but the railway chapter is just as important, and this little board is one of the last quiet reminders that it happened here too.
