Amid deepening socio-ecological crises, urban realities are changing fundamentally. Cinema, a medium historically intertwined with the city, has likewise undergone a profound transformation in its modes of representation and visual culture since the late 1980s. Today filmmakers, photographers, and radical artists investigate the distant landscapes and territories of extended urbanization in all their complexity and films like Behemoth (Zhao Liang, 2015), Homo Urbanus (Ila Bêka & Louise Lemoine, 2010), and Leviathan (Véréna Paravel, 2012) exemplify this practice. 🎥🏙️

How do cinema and the representation of the city mutually shape each other? This book stages an encounter between filmmaking and the built environment, as well as film theory and the theory of planetary urbanization, by deploying the notion of the urban sensorium as a conceptual lens. It foregrounds the multifaceted sensory experiences of urban life within and beyond the city and their representation in cinema. 🌍

🇬🇧 "Der Flügelhausgrundriss" examines this contemporary European housing typology which creates courtyards and gardens, reduces street space and costs, and supports social‑ecological urban goals. Illustrated case studies, a sunlight study, and climate‑sensitive design guidance demonstrate practical applications. This new book by Christoph Mäckler and Mischa Bosch is volume 14 of the "Bücher zur Stadtbaukunst" series.

🌊 A persistent narrative portrays the ocean as an uninhabited space. However, centuries of commercial trade and an expanding network of infrastructures above and below the water’s surface have long challenged this view, prompting researchers to conceptualize the sea as an urbanized environment.

🚢 While the sea is a global arena where architecture, ecology, infrastructure, and politics intersect, its spatial dynamics remain largely uncharted.

🧭 In a time of planetary urbanization, "The Ocean as Ground" explores oceans as urban spaces by unveiling forgotten histories, projects, and narratives. How might we understand land urbanization starting from the oceans?

🌐 Through the conceptual lens of “ground”, this new book invites readers to rethink how we perceive, design, and inhabit the spaces of both land and sea.

Book Talk & Film Screening
Tuesday 3/21 6:30-8:30PM
Head Hi, 146 Flushing Ave, Brooklyn, NY

In honor of Earth Day 2026, join us for an evening conversation and film screening celebrating the new book All the Queens Gardens: Everyday Landscaping in New York’s Largest and Most Diverse Borough by architect and artist Rafael Herrin-Ferri.

For the special occasion, we will play an accompanying short film by Sean Mowry which captures the story of Herrin-Ferri’s work documenting the surprising beauty of New York City’s largest & diverse borough. It’s a personal story and a larger history about why Queens looks so strange and spectacular.

About the book:
In his second book exploring the urban vernacular of Queens, New York, Herrin-Ferri shifts his focus to the green spaces that accompany the houses and small multi-family buildings of the “World’s Borough.” As varied and colorful as the façades featured in All the Queens Houses (JOVIS, 2021), these spaces introduce an organic, botanical element to the streetscape. Semi-formal lawns in the French and Italian traditions sit cheek by jowl with the improvised arbors of Chinese vegetable gardens, Caribbean-inspired flower gardens, brightly colored Hindu courtyards, elaborate hand-crafted water features, life-size replicas of fauna, and countless other displays of idiosyncrasy and cultural diversity.

Through its photographs and text, this book paints another portrait—softer and greener this time—of the dynamic and multicultural landscape that is Queens NY.

Gerechtes Wohnen?
Neue Perspektiven auf die Stadt

📖 Buchvorstellung und Gespräch
Dienstag,, 19.30 Uhr

Eintritt frei

What makes regional architecture internationally recognized? 🏔️

This book explores how contemporary Alpine architecture, especially in Austrian Vorarlberg and the Swiss Grisons, has been shaped by media, awards, exhibitions, and critical discourse since the late 1980s. By combining cultural theory with case studies, it reveals how a distinct image of the Alps was constructed and how it continues to influence architectural quality and perception today 🏡

Featuring insights into works by Peter Zumthor, Valerio Olgiati, Gion A. Caminada, and others, this new book is a compelling look at how regional identity in architecture is created and communicated far beyond its origins 🌍

With warfare seemingly creeping up on us – because governments keep starting them – it seemed like a good idea to speak to Ed Wall, Professor of Cities and Landscapes at the, about his book Architecture for Warfare: How Corporations Profit from Destruction and Reconstruction, published by in December last year.

It’s difficult to know what to say about this, beyond what Professor Wall describes in the book: there is a seam of architectural practice which makes the infrastructure of war and reconstruction, and makes a good deal of good business whilst doing it.

Isn’t it better, one might ask, that architects, with their designerly imaginations, their theories and lovely drafting skills, and their spatial-technical and ecological competencies, are involved in this sort of stuff? At least then it’ll have passive ventilation.

Jeremy Bentham – not an architect – drew the panopticon in the Eighteenth Century and in so doing arguably more-or-less defined the modernist city. Alfred Waterhouse designed Strangeways in the 19th, and that’s pretty🔥. Then there was Speer, of course, in the Twentieth.

So the connection isn’t new. It still feels odd, though, as Ed explains…

Landscapes of the Cluster. A Spatial Approach to Ports (jovis, 2025)
