Leaning into the sensory arts of wild plant infusions and botanical fermentations. We designed this experience during Harmonia in Alentejo, Portugal to introduce participants to our plant relatives through smell and taste before sight. Many questions and curiosities were shared - “based on the taste, does this plant survive in shade or direct sun? How deep are the roots? What shape are the leaves?”

Thanks to and for making it happen.
A beautiful work-workshop with and with wild plants and infusions in Alentejo
After two days and a night with a group of 12 kids on group survival of our hands show tracks of firewood collection, camouflage practice, primitive mattress building, fire tending, and handholding.

This group survival was unexpected. Melina and I were called last minute to guide a group of 12 children on a survival quest since the guide that was meant to join them was stuck in Asia.

When we arrived a day and a night after they had begun their survival journey together, time for orientation was minimal - as was time for building trust and rapport with the group of kids. So we worked quickly to play games and integrate each other. At the most challenging moments, we had two 6 year-olds, backpacks on, running away from us to go home. And during a better moment, we brought them back into unity with the group through storytelling and animal tracking - neither of them went home early.

holding balance of safety and bodily needs - like drinking water and staying found - with depth connection mentoring goals - like identifying edible plants, and enacting peacemaking among conflicted individuals - on top of facilitating overall fun and positive experiences that result in a child moving forward in life with a loving and joyful position towards the natural world - is what we show up for, and what challenges me.

all in all, this experience reminded me of the power of established culture, orienting to each other’s ways of being and doing things, and the richness of mentoring, skill building and depth of insight that does come out more and more with every shared experience.
Something we've been quietly preparing for a while while living at this winter.

Many of us walk through a landscape and see green. Perhaps you're connected to the uses and names of some plants and trees. But, most of the time, we find that folks living with permaculture or subsistence systems are still largely unawares of what lives beyond the edge of the cultivated plots and buildings: animal trails, seasonal patterns, bird language.

This day is about building real relationship and knowledge of place through core routines of observation with the senses.

𐫰 On Sunday, April 12th, we're hosting a full day at Terra Alta, one of Europe's most established permaculture sites in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains.

🫵 This is for you if:
— you work with land (farming, permaculture, homesteading) and want to deepen your relationship to it
— you're an educator or facilitator wanting to bring nature connection into your practice
— or you're simply nature-curious and ready to experience it differently

🌀 What we'll do together:
→ Sensory awareness routines from deep nature connection
→ Wildlife tracking & reading natural patterns
→ Mapping as a practice of observation
→ Storytelling and presence in wild landscapes

No permaculture experience needed. Just bring curiosity, waterproofs, and your lunch.

Places are limited, register by April 9th.

The inner bark of trees - called phloem - makes some of the finest natural tinder.

We harvest it sustainably from dead fallen trees - in this case from mediterranean cypress that came down in a storm

Then we sort it, dry it, rough it up into fibres and use it to ignite our ember!

We completed a winter of wilderness skills in community! I’m celebrating that we gathered as 20-30 adults and kids each month and gave our full attention to hands-on connection - dirt time.

I want to live with people close to nature, long term. These are the days of preparing fertile ground of communal learning, real skills and shared nature centred, child centred culture.

There’s 1 final opportunity to get together with us and your kids this year before autumn →

Big thanks to for the winter journey
Nature deficit disorder is real. One of its indicators is reduced outdoor play.
Children aren’t the only ones impacted by this! Both children and adults learn through mimicking the actions of others.

Role modeling is one of the best ways to inspire and encourage behaviour in a child. It’s also one of the best ways to motivate oneself to break behavioural boxes and habits!

Now, find a tree and wiggle yourself into its branches...

These stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) grew wild in the neighborhood. I cut them after seed in autumn, let them dry, cracked the stems, and peeled the outer fibers (see process on IG page). Once softened and twisted, they become cordage, smooth, strong, and helpful.

Stinging nettle is a plant to be revered for countless uses. It’s an honor to work with such a marginalized plant — one who’s been shunned for its sting. Keep spreading the sting!

25 years of living here and I'm just now arriving consciously on Earth's body. I've known this has been home but my body didn't realize. When I stood up after a night's sleep in this debris hut, belonging here became far more clear.

It wasn't the best night of sleep, but it was a good deep teaching. Highly recommend and I'm happy to help make it happen for you 🤟🌞

Thanks to cedar, birch and fir and the rest for keeping the rain and cold out.
