Because emotion is processed visually before it’s understood intellectually, every choice I make, from light to color to depth of field, is guided by how the human brain perceives life and presence:
1) Thus, instead of muting the world, I learn to balance it. If a scene is dominated by green, I look for the “complementary” colors in the subject, like the warm tones in an animal’s eyes, to create contrast that feels natural.
2) I don’t need to “add” color in post-production if I shoot during the golden hour. The low-angle sun provides a natural 2500K warmth that breathes life into the frame.
3) As a result, I like working with a warm, monochromatic earth palette, staying within one color family and relying on tonal variation to create depth, cohesion, and a calm emotional flow. Image one is a good example, and the following were my dominant colors: Caramel bronze (a57848), burnt umber (804f23), taupe brown (785e3e), chestnut brown (523921) - see slides 12 to 14.
4) Notice the small sparkle in the eyes of my subjects? Biologically, we associate reflective eyes with consciousness. Without that tiny glint of light, an eye looks “flat” or “dead.” That sparkle is the moment the image begins to breathe.
5) I use a wide aperture (low f-stop) to create “bokeh,” or that creamy background blur. By eliminating distractions, I’m helping your brain identify the subject instantly. If your background is messy, your emotional connection is diluted.
6) Before I press the shutter, I wait for a moment of shared awareness. Research shows that images highlighting “personality” drive more conservation action than cold data. Thus, I use a long lens to give my subjects space, stay quiet, and wait for that second of curiosity.”

It was such a special moment seeing the elephants drink at the water hole at. After dark it was even more magical seeing the stars appear. Unfortunately it’s not possible to capture the elephant and stars in one photo so I shopped two photos into one, both taken that same evening.
