Locked up in a room on some of the hottest days of the year, staring at a screen, eating dried ginger, we got an overview on the status of garden and landscape architecture; what themes designers are working on, what methods, what materials, what concepts, what worldviews.
We shortlisted 30 projects and in the end awarded 6 projects and 5 special mentions.
Thanks Landezine and Zaš for the invite and for taking such good care of us.
Thanks for the great discussions Lisa, Lili, Catherine and Zaš. Wonderful to exchange thoughts with all of you.

So, I’m keeping busy. Got a new project, don’t call me. Or better yet: do call me! I know a lot of talented designers who would love to help out!
This year, it was my turn as Head of Landscape Architecture. I was triggered by a quote by Dutch philosopher and cultural anthropologist Ton Lemaire: “After the self-worship and self-deification of man at the time of triumphant modernity, the time has now come to relativize and abandon it in favour of a cult of the earth, our cradle and home, with its extraordinarily complex fabric of living beings of which we as humans are allowed to be a part.”
I invited artist Theun Karelse to develop the Winterschool with this idea of a Cult of the Earth in mind and think of a way to bring all the student’s work together in a multi-sensory, festive experience.
Theun invited a wonderful group of artist to collaborate with the 125 students on ten different realms: Marit Mihklepp, Adriana Knouf, Onkruidenier, Teun Castelein, Anne de Andrade, Robbi Meertens, Anna Fink en Elza Bezina, Emma Hoette, Cat Kramer and Zack Denfeld and Frank Bloem. Each one of them bringing another mode of expression to the Winterschool.
The opening of the Winterschool was at De Duif, a monumental church at the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam with Ibelisse Feragutti, Frank Heckman and Johan Roeland.
Yesterday we closed the Winterschool with a cacophonic celebration of all the student’s work, ending up in a party.
Thanks for all who contributed, not in the least to in helping making these ideas a reality.
I suggested to look into,,, and and to talk to about her wonderful plantings.

But this one, in Urbino, definitely was: nested in the urban fabric, this small, condensed, shaggy garden has a lot of character. A work in progress, which to me makes it much more interesting than most perfectly organized botanical gardens.
Great execution and collaboration with
Over the years, the garden has become a place to learn about plants, to read, to write, to be with family and friends, to store my growing ceramic collection, to worry about, to let the dogs run wild, to escape the city, to care for, to neglect, to work in, to be useless in, to make a mess, to try, to fail, to aim and to let go.
This garden offers me experiences and thoughts different than the other spaces I move between; never finished, forever changing, forcing me to adapt and move along.
Garden with a memory incorporates spolia from the site’s industrial past. Not removing all that has been, but instead growing from it.
When all the industry has been replaced, this garden serves as a living and growing memory of what once was.
Thanks for the opportunity to create this
