A quick day trip across the border to 🇮🇹. Glad about a send of this trad classic 💎. Yes you hear right; It's a trad classic even it's bolted. Does it make sense to place cams alongside fix quickdraws? I don’t think so. But unfortunately, that’s the sad yet everyday reality of trad climbing here around. This route is made for mobile protection, and it doesn’t even make it any more dangerous—all the placements are bomber. Anyway, it was a beautiful day in good company. This attempt failed because of the sun at the exit, but at least there were a few great seconds of flying. On the next attempt, completely in the shade, it worked out. Afterward, there was the obligatory P & B (pizza and beer) in Domodossola 🍕 🍻 😍

Last Friday, the conditions were perfect for a long day of skitouring. The snow on the north-facing slopes was still in excellent condition, and the cold north wind kept daytime temperatures from rising too much. In the end, I covered 3,200 meters of elevation gain and 27 kilometers. A total of 5 peaks with 5 fantastic descents in perfect snow. I was already familiar with some sections, while others were completely new to me. It was a day when I let my intuition guide me and stayed out as long as I wanted. I had a rough plan, but at each peak I reassessed the situation and decided anew where to go next. Every descent motivated me for another ascent. The best part was that my girlfriend accompanied me for the first third of the route. When I took off my skis at about 1,000 meters, I only had to hitchhike for 5 minutes before a friendly ski tourer picked me up and took me almost all the way home ☺️🙏. Last Tuesday, and I completed the first team free ascent of “Komplexe Komplexe”— an esoteric, slabby dream boltet by Raphi. We spent several days together on this route this winter. When we returned last Tuesday, I wouldn’t have even dreamed of a free ascent given my significant lack of training. But Silvan suggested that we should at least try to free climb all the complex sections as far as possible. Since Silvan had already checked out the route a bit better, he led the first four pitches without falling, and I was able to refine my solutions a bit while watching him and free climb the pitches as second. This approach worked well for both of us, as we made quick progress and both had a chance of a free ascent. Besides, we had both led the pitches on previous attempts and knew that leading doesn’t make a significant mental difference once you know the sequences. On the fifth and most difficult pitch (8a+), we set up a belay in the middle at a nohands-rest using an existing bolt and a Friend to reduce the rope drag in this long pitch. This splits the pitch into a 7b and an 8a. It doesn’t make a huge difference, but it’s definitely more comfortable to climb. Silvan also mastered this pitch on his first attempt. Now I knew that the sending train was in full swing. I let him down and checked the pitch thoroughly once more, since I still had absolutely no solution for it. But thanks to Silvan’s tips, the puzzle was quickly solved, and after a short break, I too managed to successfully lead the pitch. We then got the next two 7a pitches out of the way as quickly as possible.

Since I wasn’t sure how I’d feel due to the concussion I sustained two weeks ago, I hadn’t planned this. But once I got there, I saw that the conditions were right that day, even in terms of avalanche risk. I’ve been very cautious this winter due to the persistent weak layers, which is why I skipped many of my usual runs. But now, thanks to the fresh snow and slightly warmer temperatures, things have changed, and the favorable factors have prevailed. I’ve skied these lines many times before, always in safe conditions, but never with good snow from top to bottom. Now, on about the tenth try, both factors aligned. I just want to show that it’s worth being patient for things like this, because terrain like this leaves little room for error. A 40-degree + slope and a north-facing aspect are simply tricky, especially in winters like this one.
I’m now looking forward to a great spring season with more fantastic ski days. Once the snow is gone, the descent after an endurance training session will be a bit less enjoyable for non-flying alpinists.

The northwest face of the Klein Fiescherhorn – also known by some as the “Ochs” – is one of the great yet surprisingly little-climbed walls of the Bernese Alps. The face, around 1100 meters high, is clearly visible from Grindelwald and from afar almost appears inviting. However, anyone who looks more closely will notice the steep, often loose rock in the upper part of the wall and a wild structure that offers few obvious lines.
It is therefore remarkable that the wall had previously only one route: the line established by Mäusy Lüthi and Hermann Steuri in 1935. This route was first repeated in winter only much later, in 1981, by Michael Boos and Patrick Hilber. Despite this history, the northwest face still offers plenty of space for new ideas.
However, our project did not begin as planned. A week before our successful ascent we had to abandon a first attempt: Jonas Schild was hit by a rock and suffered a concussion. Jonas is tough and descended to Grindelwald with us under his own steam, but the wall made it abundantly clear that it must be taken seriously.

Sometimes things turn out differently than you think. Like last year we traveled to India in October to try a new line on Mount Shivling (6,543 masl). Unfortunately, we were very unlucky this year and the monsoon lasted much longer than usual. Because of this, we couldn't even try the approach to our line due to too high avalanche risk. Fortunately, we didn't have to search long for an alternative. Less than 100 meters from our base camp, a beautiful, aesthetic pillar rose 350 meters into the air. We later named it Kirti Nose because it resembles the Nose at El Cap and is located on the side of the Kirti Glacier. During four days, Andy Schnarf and I were able to realize a nice first ascent. I will never forget how our cook and friend Surij called us from the kitchen in the evening to tell us that dinner would soon be ready and we should start rappelling. Just like when we were little kids on the playground. The climbing consisted partly of perfect cracks, partly of blank sections, which we managed in aid climbing. After so many days of bad weather, it was wonderful to spend these days in the sun in the vertical. Special thanks to and for the great hospitality on our way back to Gangotri 😉🍻
