Great session a couple days ago out at Ponderosa to ring in the new year! A couple seasons ago established this wild boulder problem that involves a modern style paddle move. I was lucky enough to show up that day and witness the first ascent. At first I was sure I could power through it, however, I quickly realized it was more nuanced than that. For such a simple looking move I just couldn’t figure it out. After that I sort of wrote it off. Then a couple weeks ago I found some motivation to test it out again, and with an open mind started to feel the flow on this move. V14 may not be a super news worthy ascent these days, but in New Mexico it still feels pretty special on account we only have a few and each one so far presents a completely unique challenge. They all seem to have a very specialized trick you must master. In the last couple years Caleb has really lead the charge in the high end bouldering development and I’m fired up that I actually have quite a few tricks I need to figure out now. It seems like bouldering and high end sport climbing in NM is turning a page and we’ll see some exciting things coming to life in the next few seasons.

“Nine Lives” V14 second ascent
This morning Cally and I had to say goodbye to our best friend, Peyton. In what felt like a blink of an eye and at the same time an eternity, she was gone. As most of you know, my account is primarily dedicated to sharing the joy, challenge and freedom of climbing but today it just feels useless. That being said, much like life that is fleeting, I will remove this post after 10 days, one for each of her years. It’s simply to share the news with the many friends that Peyton has crossed paths with throughout her life (because there is a lot), and to celebrate the good times in as many photos as I can fit in this app. Peyton was a cornerstone in our daily life, making the hard days easier and the good days better. She went on countless adventures with us, and at the same time reminded us to slow down every now and then to enjoy the simple stuff. We will miss her deeply, more than words can describe. Which is proving to be extremely difficult - so I will let the photos do the rest. We will love you forever, Peyton.

Training… I love it, but I’m ready for this weather to chill out. Few more weeks 🙇🏻‍♂️

Phots by of a sessions little while ago sporting some of the new gear 🔥
Rifle. We came, we left, lots of fun was had with a great crew. Summer balance restored. Our projects narrowly won this battle and the canyon’s hardest eludes me but that leaves a perfect reason to return 😈

And myself
“Scorched Earth” 9a first ascent

In my mind, moving back to New Mexico there was a bit of mystery as to how I would find my direction in climbing. I knew it would be in the depths of seeking out first ascents, but where to look, who to ask, what is my vision, is there anything that will bring me inspiration that I’ve felt for so many years while traveling? The answer was yes, quite obviously, however I had to be patient to seek out the answers. I bolted a handful of nice projects, still working away on them but this route, sitting in plain sight was just waiting there. Envisioned and bolted by Tom Ellis it lay dormant for years. I was shown to it by on a whim when I randomly asked him one day, just take me somewhere new, in my mind, free of expectations, void of crowds and topos. Little did I know I would spend the better part of spring battling it out with the brutal sun that hits the wall the entire day, only to come to a peaceful conclusion on a cool, shady afternoon. As for the grade, it’s hard to say, could be harder, could be easier in freezing winter conditions, who knows. It’s simply one of those climbs where it doesn’t really matter. Nice memories from that little canyon that gave, myself and many friends a lot of good times.

photos. And it was filmed as well, to be part of a larger project we’re working on!
Keep working! 😤 even if the project list is getting longer…

It’s no secret that I’m back in Colorado trying to climb a project of mine at the Fortress of Solitude. It’s a 40 foot extension to the Wind Up Bird (a route I finally completed last year). Up to now, I’ve spent an estimated 60+ days working on this thing, getting heartbreakingly close a couple times. Despite the result so far, it’s been a special experience, especially sharing so much of this journey with. Her own dedication to her climbs whilst completing a full semester in school is inspiring to me. Together, we’ll keep giving it everything we have until it’s time to head home. I’d be lying to say I’m not exhausted considering the unique challenges of climbing at the Fortress in the winter, but I keep reminding myself that this is what I’ve always searched for, a route that would push me further than I’ve ever imagined. Doubts come and go but without them this climb wouldn’t be the same. Time to give it hell!

Hard to put this one into words. I am beyond happy and equally shocked to have finished my long term project at the Fortress of Solitude yesterday. First envisioned and bolted with back in 2016, I continued down the rabbit hole with around 50+ days of cleaning, climbing, moving bolts, extending the route, etc. It always felt within reach, but in true fortress form didn’t give in easily. I really couldn’t have done it without the unwavering love and support of. Together with her and many other good friends along the way I continued to believe in myself to keep coming back to finish the job. I feel like we all have a unique connection because of this wall and the beautifully intense climbing it possesses. All thanks to the special vision of none other than that sparked years of continued motivation for a select few. To top it off, there is still an incredible extension that I will continue to work on until it’s time to head home!

As for the grade, it’s hard for me to say right now but I am certain this is definitely the hardest bit of climbing that I’ve done.
