For my Groot cosplay I wanted more than just a costume. I wanted to recreate the illusion from the movies using a mix of practical effects, 3D scanning, digital sculpting, mould making and hand sculpted details. Here's how these Groot hands came to life.
EXTENDING THE FINGERS
The first challenge was the proportions. Groot's fingers are much longer than a human hand, so I started by getting extensions to change the silhouette while still be able to bend.
3D SCANNING MY HAND
To keep the fit comfortable and accurate, I created a 3D scan of my own hand with. This became the foundation for the entire build.
RESHAPING THE 3D SCAN
Using the scan as a base, I digitally stretched and filled up the gaps of the fingers until they where smootg enough to sculpt on.
3D PRINTED THE BASE
Once the digital model was finished, the hand was 3D printed. This physical base would later become the core of the sculpt.
SCULPTING THE GLOVE DESIGNS
The printed hand was covered in clay and sculpted by hand. Wood grain, roots and bark details were added to capture Groot's organic look.
READY TO MAKE MOULDS
After the sculpt was completed, mould walls and registration keys were added. Everything was prepared for mould making.
–BOLTED FOR CASTING
The mould was assembled and secured with bolts before casting. This keeps everything aligned and captures the fine details accurately.
CASTING CLEAN UP & COLOURING
After demoulding, the castings were cleaned, repaired and painted. This stage is where the raw piece starts to feel alive.
FINAL RESULTS
From a simple hand scan to a finished Groot cosplay piece. Practical effects, digital tools and traditional sculpting all combined into one build.
I might only have shown half the process but thus truly had to be the hardest part for Groot.
Yet I am happy on how it turned out!
Every prosthetic begins as a sculpture, then a mold, then a cast, before it ever reaches the skin.
