A few months ago, I made a video at Muntplein about one stone at the Munt tower with the old Amsterdam seal, including the soldier, the dog, the cog ship, and Amsterdam’s famous three-cross emblem. Standing in the Rijksmuseum gardens, I was surprised to find the same cog ship again.

Keukenhof is a location to explore with patience, to look for the best light and the less crowds, and it’s possible to photograph at every time in the day and no matter the day of the week. I believe the only important thing is patience, time, and trust.

I spent some time walking through the Rijksmuseum gardens, looking at fragments of Dutch history that many visitors pass without noticing. Old city gates from Groningen and Deventer, sculptures inspired by mythology and the Bible, and even one small detail that reminded me how closely Amsterdam’s identity has always been connected to trade.
One of the original decorative stone pediments from a former city gate shows a cog, a medieval cargo ship that became part of Amsterdam’s emblem. We saw this also at Muntplein in another video (I’m linking the reel to this one).
What I enjoy most about these gardens is that they slow you down. The museum tells stories through paintings. The gardens tell stories through stone, iron, and architecture.
And somehow, despite being surrounded by traffic on all sides, they remain one of the quietest places in the city.
📍 Rijksmuseum Gardens, Amsterdam
I scout the area beforehand. Amsterdam announces construction work with yellow signs, and knowing about those changes in advance allows me to adjust the route or prepare alternatives before the session day.
When clients have a specific location in mind, I often visit it first and take reference photos. I don’t like experimenting with new locations during a paid session. Instead, I prefer to evaluate the space and make sure it matches the vision we discussed.
I also pay attention to practical details, including trash collection days. Some streets can look very different depending on the day of the week, so I may recommend a nearby alternative with a similar atmosphere.
On the day of the session, I arrive early and cycle the entire route. This helps me check whether anything unexpected has changed and ensures I can guide the session smoothly and safely.
Something many people don’t realize is that all of my photo sessions are also guided walks through Amsterdam. Once we’ve photographed a location enough, we continue exploring. Walking helps keep the experience relaxed and natural, so the session feels less like standing in front of a camera and more like discovering the city together.
When everything is planned well, the session stops feeling like a photoshoot and starts feeling like a day spent exploring Amsterdam with a local who happens to be a photographer.
The production is visually stunning. The lighting, costumes, choreography, and staging create images that stay with you long after the final bow. The opening number alone is worth experiencing.
At times, I felt the story became a little chaotic. There were moments where so many ideas and visual elements were happening at once that I lost the emotional thread. Yet somehow, it still worked. Not because every choice felt perfect, but because it was ambitious. Just a quick note here: dialogues are in Dutch and songs in English, subtitles available in both languages.
For those unfamiliar with the name, Baruch Spinoza was one of the Netherlands’ most influential philosophers. You can find his bronze statue at Waterlooplein in Amsterdam, and I appreciated seeing his story brought to the stage in such a bold way.
One note for international visitors: English subtitles are available, although part of the set temporarily blocks them during one scene.
Would I recommend it? Yes.
Would I recommend it if you are an English speaker? Also yes, but I would suggest reading a little about Spinoza beforehand and accepting that some parts move too quickly to follow word by word. The scenes themselves are very clear about what they want to convey.
It is definitely worth seeing if you live in Amsterdam, or if you want to combine it with a visit to the Amsterdamse Bos. The theatre is easiest to reach by bike or car, and because it is an outdoor theatre, performances continue rain or shine.

I moved to the Netherlands 6.5 years ago. My partner was born and raised in Amsterdam, so this city slowly became home for me too.
This photo was taken in Paris during a photographers meetup, and ironically, I barely have photos of myself in Amsterdam because I’m usually the one behind the camera. So yes, I completely understand the struggle of coming home from a trip and realizing you’re missing from the memories.
Most days you’ll find me biking around Amsterdam, exploring little streets, museums, cafés, quieter neighborhoods, or taking trains around the Netherlands looking for places that feel special to photograph and experience slowly.
What I love most about the Netherlands is how different every area feels. Amsterdam’s canals feel grand and historic, Jordaan feels intimate and local, the coast feels peaceful, and smaller towns feel suspended in time.
My work is really about helping people experience those places naturally, without rushing through them, as I truly believe it’s not only about visiting Amsterdam or the Netherlands. It’s about creating memories that actually feel connected to your time here.
