Justin Lambert is a potter’s potter, revered in the wood firing community as an expert kilnbuilder and a perfectionist, as far as it might be possible, in the mysterious and unpredictable processes of anagama and soda firings. Justin’s pottery, which is featured in the House of Fire gallery as part of “Southwest Master Potters” exhibition, is enormously appealing at first glance for its handsome forms and stunning surfaces. But true appreciation of it is cumulative. Justin makes pottery intended for daily use, and in that sense his work is continuous of the age old potters tradition. Potters enter quietly into our lives through elevating and shaping our most vital and private experiences. A serving bowl, a vase, a coffee mug, a salad plate, a salt shaker, a casserole, an oil bottle become an integral part of the intimacy of our home. Justin has considered very carefully each of those forms, its function and the beauty which can be derived from its practicality and efficiency. For example, Justin’s coffee mug’s handle - whose shape is developed carefully by each potter over time and becomes therefore his or hers signature - is properly sized with enough space for your fingers to slide in for a comfortable grip. It is placed high so that the weight of the mug is better distributed, making it feel light when filled. The rim of the mug is glazed on the drinking side, creating a silky texture that is pleasant to the touch. The rest of the mug is treated as a canvas for the drama of the wood firing to leave its mark. The mug swells like a barrel rather than being a straight cylinder to keep your tea or coffee hot longer. You may never tire of looking at all the subtle variations of the finish as you sip in a more leisurely fashion. A mug like that will become your beloved daily companion. A house full of handmade pottery might only seem extravagant, but once you realize what a profound effect it would have on the quality of your everyday life, there’ll be no turning back! #woodfiredpottery #ceramicartgallery #handmadepottery #taosart #sodafiredpottery
House of Fire is honored to present Justin Lambert as part of “Southwest Master Potters” exhibition opening on May 17th, 2026, 4-7 pm, at 107 Kit Carson Rd in Taos, NM. Justin Lambert received his BFA from Florida Atlantic University 1999, and his MFA from Indiana University 2003. He has been firing utilitarian pottery in soda and wood burning kilns since 1999. Investigations into reduction cooling variations in the teardrop anagama, tube anagama, and hybrid gas/wood/soda adds dramatic decoration to the subtle curves in his pots. In addition to making pottery, Justin builds large custom kilns, Omnitemp Pyrometers, and conducts wood firing workshops at his home studio in Morrison, CO and around the country. Justin is also an accomplished fly fisherman, a licensed USCG captain, and ran fishing charters for many years. He enjoys spending time with his wife Andrea mountain biking, snowboarding, surfing, baking sourdough, playing with their dogs Rusty, and Daisy, and smoking a brisket during the Anagama firings. Please join us for the opening reception at House of Fire this coming Sunday. #taosart #taosnewmexico #functionalpottery #woodfiredpottery #anagama
