This film was created by Dr. Jamila T. Davis & Directed by JLove Calderón to shine a light on the trauma-to-prison pipeline, healing, resilience, and the power of transformation. What makes this screening especially meaningful is that TWO of the incredible women featured in the documentary, Cass Severe and Nefessah Goldsmith, will be joining us in person for a live Q&A following the screening!
Their stories are not just powerful… they are changing lives and systems.

Amin Abdullah.
He stood his ground so others could make it home safely.
When gunmen opened fire outside the Islamic Center of San Diego, Amin protected the community until his final moments. Police say his actions prevented the attack from becoming far worse.

Set Her Free screened at NJPAC in New Jersey to a sold out, standing room only audience of 600+ people.
I wasn’t able to be there in person, as I was home taking care of my mama - but I felt the energy of that room deeply.
And then I received my first official citation from the state of New Jersey recognizing the impact of this film.
That moved me in a way I can’t fully put into words.
Because Set Her Free is more than a documentary.
It is a film made possible through the vision, courage, and relentless commitment of Dr. Jamila T. Davis, through the truth and vulnerability of the women who entrusted us with their stories, and through the dedication of a crew(especially my son yall!)who poured their hearts into this work -often without recognition.
This film has helped change laws, change lives, and move real conversations and systems forward.
Moments like this remind me why I do this work. 💛
Deep gratitude to everyone who showed up, supported, and continues to carry this story forward.

We screened Set Her Free at NJPAC and over 600 people came out to watch a film about incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, about survival, about injustice, and about the trauma-to-prison pipeline. To see that room filled with people from all different backgrounds sitting together, listening, learning, and feeling those stories is something I will never forget.
First, I have to give thanks to God. This journey has been bigger than me, and I am truly grateful to have been trusted with this work and these stories.
Thank you to NJPAC and the PSEG Foundation for creating space for this important conversation. Thank you to our incredible panelists Helen Archontou, Senator Angela V. McKnight, Dr. Darcella Sessomes, and Cass Severe for such a powerful discussion and for the work you continue to do for women and families in our communities.
A special shout out to the powerful women of Set Her Free: Donna Hylton, Denise Staples, Myrna Diaz, and Dawn Jackson. Your courage and honesty made this film what it is.
Shout out to Executive Producer Topeka K. Sam and Director J. Love Calderon for helping bring this vision to life, and a very special thank you to Kitab Rollins for putting this whole event together and making the night so special. Also, thank you to former Governor Jim McGreevy for coming out and supporting the film and this movement.
And thank you to everyone who came out, supported, shared, and continues to support this work. It truly means more than you know.
This film started as something I hoped I could create one day. Now I can say I am also a filmmaker, and I am grateful that this story is out in the world doing what it was meant to do.
Stories change hearts.
Stories change policy.
Stories change lives.
Set Her Free is more than a film. It’s a movement. And I am just truly grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey.
After months of people asking when they can see it — Set Her Free is being screened at NJPAC on March 23rd at 6PM as part of the PSEG Foundation Social Impact Film Series.
It’s a transformative experience created to give voice to a population once silenced. And it’s a FREE event. 🤍🎟️
If you’re in the New York or New Jersey area, this is your moment. Link in bio.
This film tells the stories of justice-impacted women and survivors who were criminalized instead of protected. What started as truth-telling became part of a movement that helped spark real legislative change in New Jersey.
That still blows my mind.
And yes… I’m officially a filmmaker. 🎥✨
Executive Produced alongside my sister, with the incredible directing and producing this powerful project.
Major love to the courageous women whose voices anchor this film:
This night is about healing.
It’s about justice.
It’s about survivors being centered and heard.
You’ve been asking. Now it’s here.
Grab your FREE tickets (link in bio) and come celebrate this moment with us. 💫
