For this night, we decided to make the most of the good weather and drive directly into the Caldera de Taburiente — right into the volcanic crater of La Palma.
The plan was to photograph the rising Milky Way above one of the canyon landscapes inside the caldera, and the conditions turned out to be absolutely worth it.
A large part of our workshop group lined up under the night sky, cameras pointed toward the Milky Way, waiting for the right moment.
These are the kinds of nights that make astrophotography workshops so special. Not just the final images, but the shared experience of standing together in an incredible landscape, far away from everyday life, watching the night sky slowly come alive.

This 28mm panorama shows the Milky Way rising above Roque de los Muchachos and one of the incredible telescopes located up there. It was one of those nights where everything came together: no/little wind, a strong composition, and finally much less airglow than we had experienced during the previous nights.
We were very careful while shooting around the observatory area. No red lights or no red light in general, no unnecessary movement, and no disturbance to anyone working there. Just a quiet night under one of the most impressive skies in Europe.
La Palma once again reminded me why it is such a special place for astrophotography and I am currently thinking about organizing two La Palma workshops next year: one together with for a German-speaking group, and another one for international participants.

Damit dir die perfekten Aufnahmen unter dem nächtlichen Himmel gelingen, hier ein paar Tipps von für die Astrofotografie:
1. Dunkler Standort: Weniger Lichtverschmutzung ist entscheidender als teures Equipment. Achte auf die Himmelsrichtung, um GroĂźstadtlichter zu vermeiden und den klaren Sternenhimmel einzufangen.
2. Mehrere Aufnahmen fĂĽr Stacking: FĂĽr Sternenhimmel- und Deep-Sky-Bilder liefert Stacking (mehrere Aufnahmen kombinieren) deutlich bessere Ergebnisse: weniger Rauschen, mehr Details. Lass die Kamera einfach 5-10 Fotos machen.
3. Post-Processing ist Key: Astrofotografie lebt von der Nachbearbeitung! Kontrast, WeiĂźabgleich, Rauschreduzierung und Farbkorrektur holen das Maximum aus deinen Aufnahmen heraus und lassen die Sterne richtig strahlen.
4. Die 500er-Regel beachten: Um punktförmige Sterne statt Striche zu bekommen (wegen der Erddrehung), halte dich an die 500er-Regel (500 / Brennweite = max. Belichtungszeit für Vollformat). Für perfekte Punkte eventuell die Zeit verkürzen oder einen Startracker nutzen.

After finishing a quick 85mm panorama during our astrophotography workshop on La Palma with, I noticed two of our workshop group standing nearby, capturing the Milky Way as it was rising over the caldera.
Of course, I had to use that moment for a small starlight portrait.
This is the image that came out of it: a single exposure, shot at 5 seconds and f/1.4.
It became one of my favorite images from the entire trip, because it shows people in action beneath the night sky — fully immersed in the moment, surrounded by stars.
This image was captured with the 85mm f1.4 DG HSM on my astromodified z6.

I just arrived back home from my astrophotography workshop on La Palma with a bunch of new images and positive feedback from our participants - pretty much the best combination you could ask for!
The first nights were a bit more demanding due to the weather situation but we managed to get clear skies each night. We also tried to capture the biggest variety with the famous light house in the far south, inside the caldera and visited different sites of the telescopes and roque de los muchachos overall.
This shot was taken in our second last night where I sneaked my way in without any light to capture these telescopes at work. They aligned perfectly with the rising cygnus region of the Milky Way.

In May 2025, I had the chance to photograph the most impressive night sky I have ever seen - the Milky Way core rising above the endless landscapes of the Namibian desert.
There is something truly special about this time of year in Namibia, when the galactic center climbs above the horizon and fills the dark desert sky with incredible detail and structure.
This image is a 50mm panorama, with several minutes of exposure time for each panel, combined with additional H-alpha data to bring out the faint emission structures hidden within the Milky Way.

On my 2025 Namibia trip I finally completed a deep 135 mm mosaic of the Milky Way’s core—an idea I first tried on La Palma with much less data. I ran a dual-Samyang 135 mm f/2 rig: Sony a7 III for H-alpha and Nikon Z6 for RGB on a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer GTi. Using N.I.N.A., I shot unguided 90–120 s frames at f/2 with accurate computer-assisted polar alignment and periodic dithers. The mosaic was planned in Telescopius and executed via a custom N.I.N.A. sequence. I captured a larger field but later trimmed panels to keep full resolution and a tighter composition.
Processing revealed severe Newton’s rings—traced to a mild LP filter—appearing mainly in the green channel. I fixed them two ways: (1) channel math using the blue channel as a reference to correct green, and (2) PixInsight’s SCNR with “Preserve lightness” off, which also adjusts luminance. Between both methods I recovered ~90% of the signal with minimal artifacts. I then assembled the mosaic in Astro Pixel Processor, ultimately working around ~750 MP for the RGB master, and later blended in clean H-alpha. I also folded in 2021 La Palma stacks to further stabilize gradients.
Under truly pristine skies the data needed little beyond careful stretching, contrast, saturation, and some finesse. After weeks of iterative tweaks, the RGB+Ha mosaic cleanly frames the Galactic Center and surrounding dust lanes and nebulae at full native detail.

In December 2023 I was on La Palma to take another panorama with an 135mm lens. I love this special look and it brings an extreme depth to the shot. Of course it is also very time-consuming to realize but the effort is worth it in my eyes!
What you can see here is the Isac Newton Telescope at the edge of the telescope facility on La Palma. It's really gigantic and sometimes makes scary noises at night.
This composition has been a dream of mine for a very long time. Too many astrophotographers focus only on the center of the Milky Way, which of course looks beautiful, but it overshadows some really beautiful areas of the Milkyway. The Cygnus region with its bright and vibrant star forming regions is one of my favorite parts of the night sky. You can see it on the top right of the image.
