文身の話
身体的欠陥
と言う訳でもないが、自分で勝手に自分の身体を特徴ある様になし、真面目な仕事に従事するには甚だ(はなはだ)気が引けるが、犯罪でもやろうかという様な事には非常に陥りやすく、しかも特徴があるために捕えられ易いものに文身というものがある。これは他人を脅迫でもするのにはクリカラモンモンの身体をニューと出したら甚だ効果的ではあるが、真面目な人間には嫌がられるから自然と犯罪に近い行為をしなければならないようになって結果から考えると身体的欠陥と大した差異がなくなるものである。しかも身体的欠陥は先天的なものがかなり多数あって、身の不運と諦めなければならない事が多いが、文身は生れながらにして持っている者は絶対になく、皆、勝手にしているのであるから、これほど馬鹿気た行為は無い訳である。であるから文身をする事は警察犯処罰令で禁じられているのは当然であるが、我が国でも名の知れた文身研究家である某医学博士なんどは文身が貴重なる芸術であるかの如く礼賛して警察犯処罰令で取締られている事を憤慨してる人もある様だがまったく実情にうとい奇矯なる説で文身者の真の告白に接したことのない似非研究者たるをまぬがれない訳である。私は日常非常に多数の犯罪性文身者に接しているがいまだかって文身をして善いことをしたと喜んでいる者には一度も接したことがない。彼等は口を揃えて若気のいたりでこんなことをしたと後悔している。
その中でも特に政公という文身者の話してくれた身の上話は最も要領を得たものであり、且つ興味も深いものであるから以下それを彼の云うまま記述することにする。
ある文身者の告白
私も今でこそ五十六にもなっておいぼれましたが部に無々元気なもので、大阪の際博打ちの中でもお姫さんの政公といったら知らん者はない程でありました。
少し文身の事について語らして頂きましょう。
この刺青を入れたのは丁度十七歳の時で、その頃交際してた人は今でいうと皆不良少年ばかりで刺青を入れていないような者は一人もいなかったものですから何の考えもなく誘われるままに入れてしまったものであります。
この刺青をほってくれた人はほり徳といって、この時千日前の金毘羅さんの後のところにおりました。ほり徳はその時分はもう大分老人で年は七十位でありました、彼は小さな家に婆さんと二人で暮らしておりました。初めは私の友人の常やんという男がほり徳の家へ私を連れて行ってくてたのであります。
その時ほり徳は心安う私に挨拶して「身体を見せなさい」といいました。それで私は裸になって見せたら
「あんたの身体は白うて美しうて、ほんとにいい。これならどんな刺青でも引立つ、私から頼んでも入れさしてもらわんならん。どれを彫って欲しいか注文しなはれ」
といって彼の老人は詰びた画本(えほん)を一冊出して来ました。その画本の中には色々の怪奇な絵画が描かれてありました。
大きい繪では九紋龍の谷のぞき、弁天小僧菊之助、太蛇丸が太蛇の術を使っているところ。妲己のお百に桑名屋徳蔵の幽霊が出ているところ。清玄坊主、金時が大熊を退治しているところ。岩見重太郎の大蛇退治、やや小さいものでは女の生首やら鬼の面やら蟇(がま)やら、その外いっぱい描いてありました。私を連れて行った常やんは鬼若丸が大きな鯉を退治している文身をしていました。ほり徳もしなびた身体に一面に文身を入れておりましたが、ことさら目立ったのは腹の回りに太夫の道中を入れている事でありました、私はいろいろ思案した揚句、綱手姫が巻物を持っている図を左の腕にしてもらうことにしました。ほり徳はまず墨で綱手姫の絵を描きました、私はその際ヒヤリとしました。次はいよいよ針を入れるのでありました、ピリッと痛みがこたえました、私は額に皺をよせました、その時ほり徳は厳粛な顔をして私にこう言いました。
「刺青はねぇ、我慢というてコレを入れる時に痛いとか痒いとかいうもんではない。痛い事にもがまん出来るという印で入れるのやから、これを入れたら痛いと言ったり、変な顔つきをしてはあかん、男にゃ痛いと言うことはないもんやさかいなぁ」
これで私も皆が「がまんを入れる」というのはどんな事を意味するのかわかりました。そして一時間程彫っている間に綱手姫の可愛い顔がもう俺の身体に完全に描き入れられてしまいました。しかし今入れたばかりのところだから何だか色がにじんだ様で汚らしいところがありました。
その時ほり徳は「今日少し痛んでも色上げにお風呂に入らんとあかん、さうしてお湯の中でこすんなはれ、そうすればえらい綺麗な色になる」
と言いました、私は家へ帰って早速言われる通りに実行しました、初めは身体中にしみこむような痛みがピリピリと応えてきて、何ともいえへんいやな感じがしましたが暫くしてすぐ慣れました。

前回の豆札の会はユーモア感たっぷりでしたが、今回は
北斎さんと英泉さんの絵師的表現の対比類似など真剣に楽しめる展示構成になっていました。
もちろん目玉の北斎さんの海女と蛸、あたし自身も初めて観たあの絵の類似作もなかなかの見応えでしたよ。
