Tanzanian director Jigar Ganatra is known for creating eco-philosophical documentaries that explore the deep connection between people and nature.
Children of Honey is a collaborative documentary co-created with the Hadzabe, an ancient hunter-gatherer community. The film follows three young members of the tribe as they navigate the challenge of preserving their indigenous way of life while facing the growing pressures of the modern world and climate change.
With around 90% of their ancestral land now gone, these young storytellers take up cameras themselves, inviting us into a rare and intimate view of a culture that is on the edge of disappearance. Through this shared perspective, the film offers a fresh and powerful reflection on the human–nature relationship.

In this episode of Protect The World, I speak with – founder and chairman of the African School of Storytelling. And as a bonus, we were also joined by the organisation’s co-founder, Frank Papushka, and their program’s director, Simi Nickmanova.
Based in Tanzania but working across the African continent, AFRISOS exists to provide opportunities to the next generation of African nature filmmakers and community-based storytellers. Over the years they’ve delivered dozens of innovative programs, and collaborated with a range of Indigenous communities to produce authentic, impact-driven films.
The team joined me live on location in Tanzania’s spectacular Eastern Arc Mountains, and it made for an incredible conversation, which I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

A film crafted in collaboration with the Batwa Hunter-Gatherer community of Uganda in a language that is almost no longer spoken - Rutwa. We found only one remaining speaker, Elivera, and through the process of creating an authentic script in their language, she became the heart of the film.
Visually, we wanted to reflect all the layers of Bwindi Impenetrable forest, the vast and the intimate, the ancient and the fragile. Using the new Sony G Master lenses (28–70mm F2, 50–150mm F2, and 100mm Macro), we moved between wide landscapes and the smallest details, between tight moments and open forest.
The BTS was filmed by, an alumni, carrying forward the same spirit of collaboration behind the camera as well.

In order to celebrate and respect these traditions in a way that would stand the test of time, I needed to use the best tools at my disposal, and that’s why I chose Sony G master lenses paired with Sony Burano and Sony FX3 cinema cameras. The Sony camera systems are versatile, with built-in features that allow a cinematographer to succeed in every situation in capturing the best light. The variety of Sony lenses I used for this film allowed me to create a compelling visual narrative full of magical realism and texture - which is just what I needed for a story like this.
