She began her career as a secretary specialising in shorthand and typing, and during the war worked for the Home Guard in Bury St Edmunds. After WWII, Phyllis met her husband Cyril at a club night at Wembley Synagogue, and they married in 1948. Together they built a loving family, welcoming two children, Julian and Danielle, and later grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her younger years, Phyllis enjoyed playing golf, followed by lunch and a game of bridge and said she feels lucky to have had such lovely friends and family. 🤗

Through her work, people living with dementia – and those who care for them – are supported to stay connected to their identity, enjoy meaningful experiences and feel truly valued within their community.
From dementia‑friendly dining and community singing, to powerful creative projects like A New Beginning, Tanya’s work brings joy, dignity and belonging to everyday life. She is also a passionate advocate for dementia awareness, sharing her expertise with staff, partners and the wider community to help shape more inclusive, dementia‑friendly spaces.
Through collaboration, innovation and deep respect for lived experience, Tanya continues to redefine what compassionate dementia care can look like.

It was wonderful to come together to share so many happy memories, laughter and stories from the years spent at the home. The afternoon was filled with smiles, friendship and appreciation for the incredible community that has made Vi and John Rubens House such a special place.
While there were a few emotional moments saying goodbye, there was also so much excitement as everyone looks ahead to the next chapter at the beautiful new Sugar & Ronson Campus and The Sugar Family Care Home.

Traitors star Alexander Dragonetti presented representatives of Jewish Care with the award.
We are truly honoured to receive this recognition, which reflects the compassion, dedication and outstanding care our teams provide every day to residents and their families.
Last year, 40% of residents moved to Jewish Care homes for end-of-life care, reflecting a rising demand for short-term palliative care. The need continues to increase as people are living longer with multiple long-term conditions and advanced dementia.
The award shines a light on how vital holistic care is to meet the community's needs with expertise, empathy and grace at the end of life.

At the Garden Party, HRH The Princess Royal warmly asked Solly, “So this is your party, is it?” When Solly told her it was his first time attending, she smiled and told him to enjoy it.
She also asked where he had travelled from that day and, noticing he did not have a coat, kindly checked that he was warm enough. Solly reassured her that he was absolutely fine.
Solly, an AJEX member's own story is remarkable. Aged just 17, while working in an aircraft factory in Neasden, he passed an Army recruitment centre every day and decided to enlist. Having previously been in the Army Cadets, he put his age down as 18 and was accepted as a new recruit.
After basic training in Canterbury, he served with the East Surrey Battalion before being sent to reinforce troops in France, joining the Hallamshire Battalion after heavy losses. He landed in Normandy and advanced through France, Belgium and Holland, often in contact with the enemy. He later recalled how lucky they were to survive.
Following the Arnhem disaster, Solly spent the winter months in Holland holding the line, with one of his most vivid memories being standing patrol among the frozen canals, hearing the ice cracking around him. He later moved through Belgium and Germany, before returning to England to train for the Far East. The atomic bomb changed those plans, and he was instead sent to Italy near Venice before being released for work of national importance.
Thank you to The Not Forgotten for hosting such a wonderful occasion. We were privileged to bring six Jewish veterans and their guests to Buckingham Palace and honoured to see our veterans recognised for their service, courage and contribution.
A wonderful British tradition, and a very special day for Solly, his daughter and all who attended.

To mark this milestone, a celebration was held at the Michael Sobell Jewish Community Centre on the Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Campus in Golders Green, where it all began.
Now, the Café is held at our Sandringham care campus and Finchley Reform Synagogue, Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue as well as and Kingston Liberal Synagogue, offering a welcoming sociable, welcoming and inclusive space where everyone can share similar experiences, stories and seek support. There is support through reminiscence activities for people living with dementia and to their family carers too. It is run by specialist staff and supported by volunteers who lead the engaging, stimulating activities.
Pam Bertschinger, who has volunteered at The Memory Way Café right from the start and was part of the founding team with our specialist community dementia practitioners, shared at the event, 'I’m very proud to be part of this project… together with my fellow volunteers Fay, Ana, Linda, Rina, Paulette and Robin, who have been committed and loyal over the years and make the magic happen.”
The passion, commitment and great heart of our wonderful volunteers and staff, have made this initiative such a success.
