On his very first day of lessons, Jethro, eager and a little impatient, asked Ajay how to paint the transparent washes. Ajay simply said, “First, we need to make the base colour.”
He handed Jethro a small clay pot of dried khuriya (kaolinite) and told him to reconstitute it with his finger until it reached the right consistency. Jethro mixed for about four minutes before confidently saying he was done. Ajay took a look and said, “It’s not smooth enough.”
He spent the entire day,from nine to five, just mixing khuriya. Nothing was painted that day. By evening, he began to wonder what he had gotten himself into. “Why am I here? Why did I quit my job? Should I just book a flight home?”
A few weeks later, once they’d gotten to know each other better, Jethro laughed and told Ajay, “I still can’t believe you made me mix paint for an entire day.”
Ajay smiled and said he had done it for a whole year before he was even allowed to touch a brush. “Patience,” he said, “is catching a squirrel and painstakingly making your own brush before you can use the famous squirrel-hair miniature brushes.”
When Ajay told him he had done this as a teenager, Jethro asked — half serious, half anxious — “So… is that what’s required to learn miniature painting properly?”
After a long pause, Ajay looked him in the eye and said, “…No.”
Looking back, Jethro thinks that’s when the moon appeared — when he understood that the real lesson was never about the brush or the pigment, but about waiting, watching, and learning to see.

This is a vision of many life forms that do, or once have or could live in the British isles.
I live in England which is perhaps one of the most nature depleted countries in the world.
There is sadly no true wilderness left. Nevertheless there is always wonder all around if we chose to see it.
I love drawing into gold, adds a touch of divinity to my doodles.
Here are loads of animals in an archetypal realm. I read somewhere that in shamanic cultures shamans can go on ritualistic symbolic journeys where by they travel to an upper world but can also go to an underworld to receive guidance and messages from beyond to bring back to the worldly plane.
The underworld is not a hellish place but a deeply grounded place,a realm of archetypes,goodness and a peaceful foundation.
I listened to drums and in my minds eye travelled to the top of a hill where there were beech trees. At the foot of a large beech tree in the roots I could see a light. I got on to all fours and then on to my stomach I climbed down into a whole between the roots. I dug deeper down into the soil deeper still into a badger set like tunnel, I kept going down, deeper down into the black earth. Sinking deeper still. Until a light shone at the end of a tunnel. Through the tunnel I went until I reached a great expansive space. It was a lighter than day light realm. A huge plain was set before me full of grasses and flowers with blue mountains in the far off distance.
I looked up at a great wild expanse of endless nature and animals where nothing had been touched by the hand of man.
I was met by a buffalo. A huge buffalo 🦬. Formidable but benign. Soft fur but massive and incredibly strong. Kind eyes. Eating grass chewing the cud. I sat on his back. I then sank into the buffalo. I became the buffalo eating the grass. I was then shat out of the buffalo. Becoming manure and then the soil and then the grass. I was then eaten by the buffalo again becoming the buffalo, then again becoming the manure/earth and grass again in several cycles. 😂
I then went back to the tunnel and into the worldly world again.

Thank you for all the frames.
I went to a great party in an incredible garden in Bandra, Mumbai last year. I was a bit jet lagged and remember thinking I really should have spent more time talking to the people there, I kept finding myself looking up at the amazing full moon and of course the trees 😂 that were really beautifully lit against the dark night sky.

Last year I met with some friends (tired Dad crew) for a few beers after work and we made a fire in the woods. It was a calm and good evening.
I’m a painter not a poet but here are a few words to convey what the painting in part means to me:
We are, Staring into no-thing,
The bonne fire is burning
In-between all the talking
the Canopy is calling
sparks keep rising
tilting the stars into Being.
