Using loops made from cord, soya 征矢 arrows are inserted through the top of the loop down (left/center/right) in sets of three. There are thin slats where the arrow heads are secured called a yakubari ita 矢配板

According to sensei, depending on the samurai and the situation, ebira held 12 or 24 arrows.
Lastly a cord is wrapped around the top holding all arrows securely but not too tightly. This set up and arrow order ensures arrows don't fall out when crouched or lying on the ground shooting low or during sudden movement etc.

ever since learning about jousting in primary school via King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, martial arts on horseback was something that I had always wanted to try.小学校時から騎士道やジョスト:馬上槍試合や馬上武芸に興味ありました
learning about Kisouma and traditional Japanese horse tack then other weapons like tachi, naginata, yari on horseback has been eye opening and very interesting. 日本で和種馬、和馬具や馬上武芸(太刀/弓/槍/薙刀)とふれある機会があって感謝してます
While the training is very flexible the horses are about 3~4 hours away. With work and family I am limited to once a month so progress is very slow. Each practice is precious and highly enjoyable.お稽古多くて月一で上達が遅いが毎度楽しい
movement and speed on the souro 走路 tracl is dynamic and it doesn't really work with portrait video unless you have someone there to film and track you🥺 一人稽古ですと撮影も中々難しい

Have you heard of tameshigiri? I'm sure many of you practice with an iaito or nihonto regularly. I always thought it looked quite difficult.皆さん試斬(試切)はやったことありますか？
Tameshigiri or 試斬 translates as 試 test 斬 cut(sometimes 試切) and was traditionally performed on cadavers, armour, wara/straw, bamboo, and sometimes prisoners as a way to test the sharpness and effectiveness of swords.
These days practitioners cut rolled tatami to test their cutting abilities on a target using a live blade. 歴史的に日本刀を試して着り味の確認などで色んな物を切りました。伝代では切る技術、美しい所作を見せるための試斬が一般的なようです。

This was my first time trying anything with a shinken真剣 or live blade. Shogo san was a wonderful supporter.
The correlation and balance of power, speed, angle, direction, pressure, and tension mean a lot is happening in different areas of the body to coordinate the movement required to perform a clean and elegant cut.
I concentrated as much as I could, eventually making three cuts in a row. Very slow but I was happy with the result considering it was my first time🤗 Thank you to the dojo sensei and thanks to Shogo san🙏🏻

I sometimes get DMs asking where people can do barebow when they visit Japan and I have only really ever done field archery and this is the place I go to.
The archery population here in Japan is tiny compared with the kyudo population (11,493 vs 137,526 ) as a result there aren't that many places to learn or practice archery (where I live in Saitama, anyway) 神奈川国際フィールドアーチェリー所の紹介
I loved being outdoors in the different parts of their course. The bamboo forest was really nice too.

It's like comparing 🍎 and oranges🍊. They are both round but taste super different🤭
Field archery is in another category with a totally different type of difficulty. Initial usage of the bow and equipment is straightforward but add in string walking and targets up down far close small big etc it brings out a need for versatility in the archer for sure.

Outdoors with the recurve I had to adapt my shooting to each target body angle, aim, just very very different kyudo where basically the target doesn't change height or direction.ベアボーリカーブは狙い毎回毎回違って、弓道は基本的に的の角度高さが変わらない。
The nocking point always blows my mind too. With kyudo we nock the arrow on the outside of the bow because thumb draw, recurve archery on the inside.矢をつがえる所も中々違って、弓道は弓の外側、リカーブは弓の内側。

If you have seen the TV Series Shogun then you will have seen takagari appearing in several episodes. During the past year I spent time researching traditional falconry in Japan.
Takagarii has a long and interesting history starting off as something limited to the bakufu 幕府 or aristocracy, eventually becoming a pastime that the samurai class enjoyed. It was more than just a sport; it was also a form of martial training (hōyōjutsu 放鷹術) that instilled virtues such as patience, discipline, and precision.
Falconry was frequently practiced until the end of the Edo period, but practitioners or Takasho 鷹匠 gradually declined after the Meiji Restoration.
The season for falconry here is limited to the period between November 15th until February 15th. Usually, Takasho 鷹匠 train their birds over the summer and hold falconry displays starting in Autumn.
I found it to be difficult to search out, contact and visit very traditional schools that keep birds reared and trained with very historical methods, as there are not many groups left.
I was very privileged to meet and spend the day with two practitioners of this ancient art. One was Endo san, a practitioner of Suwa Ryū Hōyōjutsu 諏訪流 放鷹術 practicing in the group he established in 2016 Society for Suwa Traditional Falconry 諏訪流古技保存司会. Like other kobujutsu there are different ryu or schools of falconry. Some schools have branches (including the one I met with) that rear and train their birds using very traditional methods not often seen these days.
The public falconry displays, events, and experiences here in Japan will usually have tame birds bred and trained to be used to human contact. Endo san had tame birds. He also has birds trained in a more traditional way. Initially, the bird is fed in darkness and slowly taken outside to be walked in the middle of the night.

I passed my first naginata grading 初めてのなぎなた審査合格しました㊗️
Its been about 1 year since I started learning naginata.
Late last year I had my first grading and passed㊗️なぎなた始まってから1年くらいになりました。去年初めての審査受けました、合格できました。
I was so super nervous as it was my first grading and had absolutely no idea about what to expect as due to corona visiting other gradings to get an idea of what to expect wasn't permitted here due to the pandemic.とっても緊張しました(笑)
It went ok and sensei said adults on their first try in her experience usually receive 6kyu or sometimes 5th kyu so that was nice. It will take a further 4 shinsa every 6 months before getting shodan which is quite different to the kyudo dan system whereas an adult the first grade you get is shodan or occasionally 1jyu.
五級になり、初段あと約2年かかりそうです。弓道のやり方と少し違いますね。

Ebira 箙 means quiver in Japanese. Depending on the intent for usage they come in several different shapes and sizes. 矢を入れて携帯する箙は使用する場面、時代などで様々な形存在します。
The other day was the first time I got to try an ebira! I was in armour and an ebira was most fitting for carrying my arrows in this situation. 先日紅葉台で初めて箙使いましたので今日は箙は初心者としての投稿です(笑)
The ebira was used traditionally by samurai in combat or hunting, and in present day is used for ceremonial archery, such as in yabusame shinji, sports yabusame and bajo bugei, and koryu such as Heki Ryu for their teki mae display. (Photo 8&9)

Attaching the ebira was straight forward, with a string around my waist and the top of the ebira roped into my armour, it was attached onto my hip and back.
黒須先生が教えてくれました。腰にかける紐を結び、箙の上の部分を甲冑の紐に直接結びます。矢を差し込んで準備ok。
The arrows are pulled out as needed from the right hand side in downwards action arrow tip first (video) The design looks quite open and I was expecting my arrows to fall out on horseback but the design allows for the allows to move in the ebira as your body moves. 矢をしようする時は右側から矢じりを下から前へ矢つがえ。動画あります😃思ったより使用しやすくて、マイ箙すい欲しがってきた。
There's a book I have about ebira its from Tenbo 4 nen or 1833. I figured out a smiliar shaped ebirab with boar fur is called a sakatsura type ebira.
家にある天保四年1833年からの古書をみて【逆頬箙】さかつらえびらという猪皮の毛並を逆に向けて包んだ箙の形が似てますが私が使用した箙が猪皮の毛並ではありませんでした。
