📌Takeda -Ryu is a traditional school of kyubajutsu or mounted archery with a history of over 600 years.
I was very honoured to be able to meet Takehara Soke and several members of Takeda-Ryu the other day in Nikko during a yabusame ritual shinji performed by Ogasawara-Ryu
The Kumamoto Prefecture based Takeda-Ryu Yabusame Preservation Society is an organisation that is dedicated to preserving and passing down yabusame, the traditional Japanese martial art of mounted archery. They plan to perform Yabusame and hold workshops in Christchurch City at the 2026 Japan Fiesta
📌In order to bring their archers, traditional garments, horse tack, and archery equipment all the way to Christchurch, they have started a crowdfunding project.
Everyone is welcome to help if they can. For those with a Japanese address, thank you gifts will be sent to you. Support with a share, like or follow to their social media, is also warmly welcomed🙏🏻
📌The Takeda school traces its origins to a prince of the retired Emperor Seiwa. Even though the Wakasa Takeda family line ended during the Sengoku period, the now over 600 year old Takeda Ryu traditions and techniques were inherited by the Takehara family. The descendants of the Takehara family have continued to preserve this tradition in Kumamoto Prefecture since 1632

Sometimes, the whistling arrowhead doesn't make much of a sound at all!! Luckily, I have a spare one at home🫣
Filmed in Yamanashi (Narusawa) wearing Heian Period Oyoroi
Whistling arrows in Japan are called kabura ya. I love the sound they make. If you want to hear what one actually sounds like, search for the word 👉kaburaya
Usually carved from wood, the arrow tip is hollow with openings at specific points in the top.
When shot into the air the arrow becomes a sort of wind instrument and I think it sounds amazing!
Kaburaya were used by the samurai class of feudal Japan. Before battle an army archer was said to have shot 5 kaburaya with specific fletching in succession to signal the start of a battle.
Fletched on purpose with cursed feathers, in order to insult, intimidate, and cast bad fortune on the enemy. *1
📌Kaburaya for good wishes kyūjutsu or koryu archery schools perform a Shinto ceremony involving the kaburaya and ritual purification. The arrow is then called hikime蟇目. It seems that instead of wood the tip is sometimes made from deer horn. The whistling sound when flying through the air is believed to scatter evil spirits and purify the area.
These days in Japan, cursed arrows used for battle are very rare. More often than not if you pass by a temple and you are very lucky, you will see the hikime ritual ceremony instead.

Kobaton is the official Saitama Prefectural mascots inspired by the official Saitama prefectural bird: shirakobato (Eurasian collared dove)
I've had the pleasure of working with Kobaton twice on Japanese TV and it was interesting but fun trying to transport a giant mascot around in a van🤭 I have a collection of 4 plushies at home all received as presents form my position with the Saitama Prefectural Government.
I often get comments about him as I have him attached to my bag also I always reply *he is my boss* 🤭which usually elicits laugher but its true🤭 he is a wonderful boss and today is his birthday!
⚔️Please don't confuse kobaton with kabuto🤭
📌About Kobaton:
Kobaton was designated
as Saitama's first prefectural mascot in 2005. Known for its cute expressions, Kobaton travels far and wide, and has appeared in movies, flown into space on a space shuttle, and lent its name to an asteroid.

Interview with kyudo practitioner Matthew Collins from Australia🇦🇺
Matthew has been studying as a special course student at The International Budo University in Chiba. In this time, he has visited many places in Japan and met many different types of people, all with unique backgrounds and stories, many of them kyudo or bow practitioners.
Getting hands-on experience and meeting people from all walks of life has really opened him up to experiences and ways of thinking that wouldn't otherwise have been available to him if he had been located in Australia.
He has now arrived back and is moving smoothly with his plans to open a Kyudo Club called Mikan.

📌I often get asked:
📌How do you aim for kyudo?
The answer is a bit multifaceted and dependent on each person and their eye dominance. In addition, different types of kyudo/kyujutsu have different steps and words for the aiming process.
Head(eye) angle both horizontal and vertical throughout the draw is important and once set it shouldn't move as doing so will change the aim.
The main school I practice under (All Nippon Kyudo Federation) notes there are several points of aim throughout the draw.
4 in fact.
📌The 1st during uchiokoshi:raising the bow.
📌2nd during daisan the stage before drawing open.
📌3rd is san bun no ni the arrow is at eye height
📌4th is kai or full draw.
We aim with both eyes open and what we see in the 4th aim depends on the person. Roughly divided into
📌mangetsu (the target is fully on the left of the bow)
📌yami (the target can be seen through the bow as if covered by clouds)
📌hangetsu (half of the target peeks out from the left of the bow)
In addition, the feelings of
📌the string on the chest in full draw: munazuru
📌the feeling of the arrow on the side of the face/mouth (houzuke/kuchiwari)
are integral parts of aiming too.
It's a little difficult to explain aiming in a 1 min video so for more info please as a sensei, senpai or check online🙏🏻

I wear tatsukebakama on the bottom, dougi on the top. Put on waraji or straw sandals. They are really comfortable and great for horseriding.
Put on my senate or shin guards, then kusazuri or tasset. The video starts from me putting on the kote which is th3 arm armour. Each sleeve ties under the opposite arm.
Then I put the dou on and shit everything with an obi or sash.
It only takes 5 or 10 minutes to dress yourself. Armour is replica produced in the late 80s it weighs about 20kg.
On horseback the horse takes most of the weight of the armour so it's very comfortable. When not on horseback, as long as it's worn correctly, I could wear it for hours.
Horses are a Japanese indigenous breed called kisouma. Originally ridden by samurai their top speed is about 40 km/h

When people see kyudo their opinions are quite divided.
People will usually either like it or say it's too slow/dislike it.
This school of archery was established in 1953 and is a blend of Ogasawara ryu and Honda ryu which are two koryu styles.
Compared to standard recurve ea h arrow does take time as the kata for the martial art must be performed with each arrow.
The calm nature of kyudo is something that really appeals to me as a busy person with a lot happening everyday. At the dojo I can step into a space of control and autonomy on my mind, movements and thoughts. The outside world is left at the door to the dojo.
