In line with the latest podcast episode covering everything male fertility this post is crucial in understanding the parameters when we check a Semen Analysis.
Both Jen and Richa will run a semen analysis as a first guide and understanding of what is happening from a male fertility perspective. What is really imperative to understand and know also is that semen quality has declined by 40-50% over the last 50 years as a male population but the food news there is so much we can do to support and improve these parameters.
Around 50% of fertility struggles involve a male factor — yet semen analysis is still often misunderstood, overlooked, or reduced to a single “normal” result.
In this carousel, we break down:
✔️ Count vs concentration
✔️ Motility
✔️ Morphology
✔️ Volume
✔️ What “normal” actually means
Because fertility is never just one number.
A semen analysis can give us important clues about overall reproductive health, inflammation, oxidative stress, hormones, and even lifestyle factors — but it should always be interpreted in context.
And importantly:
✨ “Normal” does not always mean optimal
✨ Poor results do not mean there is no hope
✨ Many contributing factors are modifiable
Sperm regenerate approximately every 72–90 days, which means targeted changes can make a real difference.

In our latest episode of Fertility, Hormones and Hope, Professor Tet Yap breaks down exactly what varicoceles are, how they impact sperm health and why more couples need to know about them.
🩺 A varicocele is essentially enlarged veins around the testes — similar to varicose veins — which can increase heat, oxidative stress and inflammation within the testes, impacting sperm production and quality.
And the statistics are HUGE:
⚠️ Around 15–20% of all men have a varicocele
⚠️ Present in 30–40% of men with primary infertility
⚠️ Present in up to 80% of men with secondary infertility
Professor Yap also highlights something so important:
Just because a couple has conceived before does NOT mean male fertility shouldn’t be investigated.
In fact, secondary infertility carries one of the highest associations with varicoceles.
The good news?!
✨ “About 70% of men will have improved semen parameters after treatment.” – Professor Tet Yap
We discuss:
🧬 How varicoceles affect sperm count, motility & morphology
🔥 The role of heat & oxidative stress
📈 Why semen parameters can improve after treatment
🏥 NHS treatment options
🔍 Why proper clinical assessment matters (not all ultrasound findings are clinically significant)
💚The role of diet and lifestyle to support male fertility
This episode is such an important conversation around male fertility and why couples deserve a full investigation — not assumptions.

In our latest episode of Fertility, Hormones and Hope with Bare Biology founder Melanie Lawson, we dive into why vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients to TEST — not blindly supplement.
Because when it comes to vitamin D… one standard dose does not fit all.
Vitamin D plays a critical role in:
✨ Immune system regulation
✨ Hormone health & ovulation
✨ Fertility outcomes
✨ Brain health & mood
✨ Dopamine synthesis
✨ Bone strength
✨ Kidney health
✨ Inflammation regulation
And for many women, the standard 400IU recommendation simply isn’t enough to optimise levels — especially in the UK.
We also discuss:
🧬 The genetic SNPs that impact vitamin D status and response
The GC gene influences Vitamin D Binding Protein (VDBP), which helps transport vitamin D around the body and also plays roles in muscle recovery and fatty acid binding.
Meanwhile, VDR (Vitamin D Receptor) gene variants can influence:
• Sensitivity to vitamin D
• Immune function
• Dopamine production
• Bone formation
• How effectively your body actually USES vitamin D
Which is exactly why testing matters.
We cover:
✔️ When to test serum vitamin D
✔️ Why winter testing can be especially important
✔️ Why some people need significantly more support than others
✔️ Why low vitamin D is so commonly missed in women struggling with fatigue, immunity, hormones and fertility
This episode is packed with practical, evidence-based information on women’s health, mental health, fertility and supplementation 🤍

Supporting this client through the beginning of her pregnancy journey was all about creating a personalised, evidence-based plan that helped her feel informed, calm and confident.
Through nutrigenetic and microbiome testing, we were able to make tailored changes to her nutrition, lifestyle and supplementation to support both mum and baby in the best possible way.
“What I appreciated so much was that the support went far beyond nutrition and supplements alone. Jen also helped me navigate the challenges of busy London life, maintain healthy eating habits in a realistic way, and cope with the anxieties and emotions that can come with early pregnancy. It felt very holistic, supportive and personalised throughout the whole journey.”
Here’s what she wanted to share with you:
“It is an amazing support for anyone who wants to build a really good foundation when it comes to vitamins, supplements and understanding nutrition throughout pregnancy. It helps you become much more aware of what your body actually needs during each stage of the journey and gives you the confidence that you are supporting both yourself and your baby in the best possible way.”
Every pregnancy journey is unique, and personalised support can make all the difference and this is exactly what we provide at

PCOS is being renamed as PMOS — recognising that this condition is about so much more than just the ovaries.
For years, so many women TTC have been told their tests are “normal” or labelled with “unexplained infertility” while underlying metabolic, inflammatory and hormonal dysfunction was completely overlooked.
The shift toward PMOS (Poly-Metabolic-Ovarian Syndrome) acknowledges what many clinicians and women have known for a long time:
✨ This is a whole-body condition
✨ It goes beyond cysts on the ovaries
✨ Blood sugar, insulin resistance, inflammation, adrenal health, thyroid function, ovulation and fertility all matter
And importantly… not every woman with PCOS has the same presentation of symptoms:
- Some struggle with irregular cycles and ovulation.
- Some experience acne, hair loss or excess hair growth.
- Some have “lean PCOS” with no obvious weight concerns.
- Some are only diagnosed after recurrent miscarriage or fertility struggles.
This change in language helps move the conversation away from simply managing symptoms and toward understanding root causes and personalised care
Because women deserve more than:
“Just go on the pill.”
“Come back when you want to start a family.”
“Everything looks normal.”
If you’ve ever felt dismissed, unheard or confused by your symptoms — this conversation matters.
We hope this shift opens the door for:
✔️ Better research
✔️ Better diagnostics
✔️ More personalised treatment
✔️ Earlier intervention
✔️ Better fertility outcomes
Women’s health deserves nuance, not a one-size-fits-all approach

✨ Omega 3
✨ Vitamin D3
✨ Creatine
These are supplements we use consistently in clinic and in our own supplement stack — particularly when supporting women through fertility treatment, postpartum recovery, peri-menopause, ADHD, cognitive changes and low mood.
In our latest episode of Fertility, Hormones & Hope, we sit down with Melanie Lawson, founder of to discuss the growing research around women’s mental health and nutrition — from postnatal depression to brain fog, hormones and cognitive function.
A few standout findings from the research:
🧠 Omega 3
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found omega-3 fatty acids significantly improved women’s mental health in postpartum depression, particularly depressive symptoms.
☀️ Vitamin D3 + Omega 3
A 2025 review highlighted that vitamin D and omega-3 may help modulate neurotransmitters, reduce neuroinflammation and support neuroplasticity — all key areas involved in mood regulation and cognitive function.
⚡️ Creatine
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found creatine supplementation may improve memory, attention and information processing speed, with women appearing to particularly benefit.
We’re both huge fans of and their evidence-based approach to supplementation.

When and approached me to share my story, I knew instantly why I wanted to say yes.
Secondary infertility is often misunderstood — as if once you’ve had one baby, everything should “just work.” But for so many of us, the reality is very different: months of confusion, repeated treatments, unanswered questions and a heavy emotional load that isn’t always visible from the outside.
Sharing my experience wasn’t easy, but if it helps even one person feel seen, understood or less alone on their own journey, it’s worth it.
💛 You don’t have to justify your pain.
💛 You don’t have to shrink your grief.
💛 You don’t have to carry it in silence.
For anyone navigating secondary infertility — your feelings are valid, your story matters, and you deserve support.

Chemical pregnancy and loss
Every year, Pesticide Action Network UK analyse government data to see which fruit and veg are most contaminated with pesticide residues - not just one, but a cocktail of them.
Why does this matter? Because while safety limits are set for individual chemicals, they don’t take into account the combined effect of multiple residues - something we’re learning can be far more harmful to our health.
The 2026 list is out - and it’s your go-to guide for knowing what to prioritise buying organic. 🍓🥬🍎
These are the ones to prioritise buying organic where you can. Small swaps can make a big difference over time - for your health and for the planet 🌿
Grapefruit, Grapes, Limes, Bananas, Peppers, Melon, Beans, Chilli peppers, Mushrooms, Broccoli, Aubergine, Beans/Lentils (dried).
Previous offenders included leaves, berries, tomatoes and bread so I’d also seek organic here.
have a great range of organic pesticide free alternatives which I’ve highlighted here ⬆️
