One of my favorite parts of playing video games are the first moments, when you’re settling into the character and atmosphere: and in Gecko Gods, there are some pretty delightful moments of discovery! The little paw prints, chirps, and running up walls were so much fun to play with as we started this game ~ can’t wait to see where the puzzles go!

What I appreciate about games like Hozy is that, when played thoughtfully, they can allow you to appreciate the mundane objects and activities we often take for granted. Organizing my office — rather than a chore — can be an opportunity to reconnect to the memories I have with each trinket I choose to keep there, for example, while decorating spaces (like this college apartment) provides a chance for me to craft a history for the character through how I place and organize her things. Games like Assemble with Care and Unpacking do this as well, if you enjoy games with this type of theme!

I’m a sucker for games where your choices impact the story and even how the world looks, and Koshmar (which, fun fact, is also the Polish word for “nightmares”) seems to have that built in as a main pillar of the game.
Koshmar: The Last Reverie takes place in the early 1900s, and a nightmare plague (second fun fact: inspired very loosely on an actual sleeping plague in Europe in the 1900s) has taken over.
Violet — a young girl with the ability to lucid dream — is the only one who has the power to traverse the rifts and stop the nightmares…but at what cost? Your choices impact the powers she can utilize, the way she perceives the world, and even how the villagers perceive her! In addition to a gothic, psychological horror tale, this game looks like it’ll have fluid hack-n-slash style combat that you can cater to your playstyle across two extremes: Nightmare and Delusion.
With inspirations like Alice: Madness Returns, Hades, Lies of P, and even Arcane, I am eagerly awaiting even more gameplay footage and details! We don’t have a release date yet, but it is currently planned for PC and consoles (specifics not yet shared).

Geeks & Grounds, my game discussion club, is like a book club for games where we play games and brew thoughtful conversation, togther! We play one game a month, discuss it together in Discord, then meet up at the end of the month for a wider chat. And for April? We’re playing Chicory: A Colorful tale.
I’m really looking forward to this one: it’s a top down adventure where the world is a coloring book, and you are a cute pup who has taken on the role of the Wielder, the one who gets to color it all in.
Of course, there is more than meets the eye. This game explores what it means to meet your heroes and see them as human, or as fallible? It explores what it means to step into a role that feels bigger than you, and maybe even your capabilities, and the anxieties that come along with it. It’s about creativity, and the act of creation, and fostering confidence within yourself. This is a game that I think will hit home for a lot of folks, and even if you don’t play it as a part of the club, it’s one I think you should definitely try at some point.
