It’s #MudMonday! Here’s an image from last year, where the interplay of light and cracked lines created a unique and compelling scene. The patterns resembled a topographic map, and the setting sun caught the ridges while the valleys in between fell into shadow. It felt like looking at a relief map, or even an aerial view of the land. Last year was a wonderful year for mud and water in the Mojave.

Yellowstone is a place that I’ve been exploring since I was a college geology student, and it never ceases to amaze me. In this park, back in 2018, I learned I love photographing natural abstracts, with the rainbow of colors from the thermophilic bacteria and ever-changing patterns and textures. I had an ephinany on a bench in the Upper Geyser Basin where I realized that abstracts were my jam, and even though they may not appeal to everyone, they’re what made me happy and that’s all that matters in your photography journey. I learned to be my own “Creative Director” with my photography, and photograph what speaks to me, and not necessarily what the masses find appealing. Three Violet-green swallows weave in and out of the mist at the Lower Falls in Yellowstone National Park. Timing and patience were essential for this image, and I sat observing for a few hours until everything aligned and I could capture three of them in a single moment.

This anemone was the queen of the tidepool, glowing in the last light of the day. It was one of the prettiest anemones I’ve ever seen, soft white with a hint of pale yellow and nearly the size of a dinner plate. Yesterday I talked about how I always look for the light, even in smaller scenes. In this case, there was no magic beyond the final sliver of sunlight catching the front and the highest edges of the anemone. The water in the pool was completely still, and the anemone sat tucked beneath a small rock shelf. Photographing for my ongoing anemone project, this is one of my favorites that I’ve taken so far. ❤️
