Doing my ranty thing again. Sorry. 😅 If you haven’t already seen the list of the British & Irish craft chocolate makers on my website comment “craft” below and I will dm it to you. 🤎🍫

More cool nerdy useful stuff coming, but in the meantime if you could send this to someone who still thinks supermarket-available chocolate can be properly ethical and sustainable, that would be great. 🫠

British Chocolate. Ethical Chocolate. Bean to Bar Chocolate.
I first met around the time he started, more than 15 years ago. It has been so inspiring to watch the business grow and have the impact it has. In the past decade Original Beans have not just supported the planting of more than 5 million trees - a project that started from day one, and doesn’t just include cacao trees - they have truly made an impact on the environment and empowered women and indigenous farmers. This is not just a story for good marketing spin, it was always the heart of the original mission. Philipp is a sixth generation conservationist and in cacao and chocolate he saw a way to make the change he wished to see.

Thank you OB and for hosting a group of people who believe in - and act on! - the power of chocolate to make a positive difference. I have lots more to say on this! Please follow along!
Sunday 7th! The chocolate tasting with the best bars I bought in Bordeaux is on Sunday 7th June! 🫣 🤪

I really hope you can make it! Link in the bio and we are having a picnic afterwards! 🥰

Also, save the date for the next in May 2027! I didn’t mention there are lots of guided tastings and workshops there, too.

The best three days. 🤎

A sneak peak of some of the craft chocolate bars we will be tasting is coming to Substack this weekend. It was so hard to choose, but these are all incredible.

You can come alone to the tasting - it is very friendly and relaxed. Plenty of people come by themselves. 🥰

Are you going to come to #Showcolat next year? Or to my tasting? ☺️❤️🍫
Last year was the first year I grew anything from seed.

The literal awe I felt watching courgettes (well, mostly marrows, we were away a lot); these vibrant dark green fruits, bulging in those planters: I realised I must have reached peak middle age.

It was mostly a spray and pray kind of effort though, with mixed results.

This year I come with a few lessons learnt (cut the side shoots! 🤪) and I have a second planter. The joy!

I am slightly anxious that I am way behind in getting seeds into pots. I felt terrible whilst filming this yesterday, feverish and barely able to stand. But I got three types of small tomatoes, cucumbers and courgette and some corn in their little pots (or cardboard tubes for rhe corn).

They are destined for the biggest planter with some marigolds. Though the cucumber might go in a pot.

The second raised bed will hopefully have green beans, carrots and beetroot.

I already feel like I need another planter….

I bought some alpine strawberries I am hoping to spread out in the shade under trees and cross my fingers.

Last year I bought some blueberry bushes, a plum tree and some raspberry canes - we got about 15 raspberries for the season, including three I picked on Christmas day. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The raspberries are looking more lively already this year! And the blueberries look like they might produce fruit, too! 🤞🏻

I’ve also just bought a blackcurrant bush and a gooseberry bush. (Should I be calling them trees?) It’s either into pots or ground in complete shade amongst tree roots. I’m guessing pots is the answer? 😅

Are you planting anything? Do you have any advice for me? Would you like updates? 🙃
So pleased and proud. 🥰 I’m just going to put this here because this is a highlights reel, right?

Thank you,. I feel - genuinely - unbelievably honoured and grateful. ❤️

My post last week shared some of the changes I have planned for the coming year so please do click the link in the bio and have a read. I’m really excited about 2024. ☺️

I put this on my stories when it went live back in June, but thought it should live here in a permanent spot, too, in case you forgot/didn’t know that I can come and do fun chocolate tastings at your work/school/team building session. 😘

I was very honoured to be asked to share things about chocolate over two episodes of the podcast with.

Swipe for a little segment that will hopefully give you all the excuse you need to eat chocolate, but the podcast is full of them and more tips.😁👌 Here to help you eat better chocolate and more of it. 😘

Link in bio to the first of the two episodes if you want to listen to the whole thing.

NEWS! 🎉I’ve moved my newsletter to. These days I’m pretty infrequent at posting on here, despite the videos and photos that fill up my phone. and my constantly-renewing “best intentions”. 🙈

BUT, I am good at sending a weekly newsletter! Every Wednesday I share the things I’ve tried and love. And I only share things that I genuinely think are good. So please come and subscribe! The best thing about substack is that you can add your two cents at the bottom of the post, or ask me to clarify something. We can have conversation! And community! Hurrah! Kind of like here, I guess, but better? Maybe?

It’s already happening. Next one’s out later today. See you there? ❤️

P.S. Yes, it’s a heavy focus on chocolate and bakeries and quite London-centric. But frequently things that can be bought wherever you are in the world. 🙌 And some savoury things sometimes, for balance. ⚖️😄
