It’s hard to believe but I am on the last night of what I’ve been referring to as “phase one” of this summer’s travels. Tomorrow I’ll head home for a few days, and then head off for a complete change of scenery on the beaches of Mexico. The last two months have been challenging, as my stomach and allergies have failed to cooperate far more than any of my past travels. But it was a small price to pay to explore countries that I never dreamed of visiting when I started traveling 15 years ago, and the amazing people I met along the way. I’ll have more to recap when I post my pics from Georgia in a few days. For now; thanks for following along. Kyrgyzstan is one of the most epic countries I have visited. The landscapes were so unbelievable. You never knew what was waiting behind the next corner, be it mountains, lakes, forest, or the otherworldly Fairytale Canyon. This is a country that is high on my list of places I would like to return to someday and see more of, because I felt like I only scratched the surface of what this place has to offer. I didn’t even include pictures of Bishkek, the capital, because I just had so much I wanted to post from just three days in the country’s nature. 93% of Tajikistan’s buildings are also feature a picture of their president… it’s a slight exaggeration, but you can always tell the type of government a country has by the number of pictures you see of their president displayed on buildings. He’s been in power since 1994. I saw similarities between Dushanbe, Tajikistan’s capital, and Ashgabat, especially in how grandiose many of the buildings and monuments were. A lot of the city is under construction to add even more. But Dushanbe lacked the fakeness that Ashgabat had. Normal people roamed the streets and appeared to have a life in the city
It’s a country I’d like to go back and see more of. The cities I felt like I got the idea, but there is so much nature to explore that I felt like I really only scratched the surface of what makes the country beautiful #jeffacrosstheworld #beintrepid
Khiva was our first stop, and my favorite of all four. It was incredibly walkable and photogenic, looked great at night, and had a number of scenic restaurants. Bukhara had a lot to offer but felt mostly repetitive in between Khiva and Samarkand. Samarkand was a photographer’s dream, but was a lot more spaced out than the other two. In 1971 the Soviets were drilling for oil when the rig collapsed. Fearing the gases would spread, they set it on fire. 55 years later that fire is still burning
My first reaction when I saw the crater was “is that it?” You can see one of my photos on the last page. Advertising photos for the crater use photos from a long time ago, when the reality is the fire has been dimming in recent years and may not last much longer.
Thankfully when the sun went down, the crater lit up, and you can see why it is nicknamed the Gates of Hell. It was still every bit as impressive as I had seen in photos. My favorite photo I took just before sunrise from a nearby hill
How do you get there? Your tour will almost certainly include it. Either you cross the border in Uzbekistan and visit drive 6 hours along poorly paved and bumpy roads to get there before continuing to Ashgabat. Or you come from Ashgabat and drive for 4 hours along poorly paved and bumpy roads. You stay at a nearby yurt camp where you can walk to the site in short time. It is very warm and smells like gas near the crater, but you won’t notice it at camp

It’s also profoundly weird. The vibes are off. Most, if not all, of the apartment buildings are empty. Like completely hollow. I’m not sure anyone lives there. Parks are empty. The streets are walked only by people who work. We got to ride the world’s largest indoor Ferris wheel, which they started just for us, and then they wouldn’t tell us how many people ride it per year
Some of the things banned in the city include facial hair and long hair on men, theater, opera, video games, car radio, and lip syncing.
You can only visit Turkmenistan by tour. I went with Intrepid. GAdventures also goes. The visa process was confusing and there are a lot of fees, but I think they’ve relaxed the guidelines recently and will relax them even more in the coming months. Internet use is heavily restricted and VPNs generally won’t work. But I found that I was able to walk around freely and didn’t felt watched. A lot of the military, police, and border crossing guards were very friendly. Just don’t take pictures of them or any building they are in front of. The locals were very nice and many approached us to ask if they could take pictures with us. My tour did take me into the villages to see how real Turkmen live. So a lot of the information that is out there about traveling in Turkmenistan is out of date
Ashgabat is undoubtedly impressive, but hollow. It really has to be seen to be believed. My experience was mostly positive but the weirdness and fakeness of it will stay with me. I think the government is making a push to increase tourism so it will be interesting to see how things change in the coming years. I am glad I went but I am also happy to be gone, even if it means encountering more tourists #jeffacrosstheworld
