Working on my painting Let It Happen - some process in the studio. Song choice has me pondering if it’s too late for me to be a video vixen. Y/n Plz comment below

Mobilized Gaze
Oil on canvas on panel, carbon fiber, automotive paint, video

notes:
The title “Mobilized Gaze” comes from Alison Smithson, an architect who wrote about Autopia as “a new perceptual regime”.

The video (or rear-view mirror) sits atop the oil painting. It plays with an absurdist on my reality of getting ready in my car (Subaru) so often and thinking about Reyner Banham’s fourth ecology from his famous book about Los Angeles (Ecology IV: Autopia in his book). The video gradually starts to blend in with the background of the sky, a magical perspective during a permanent sunset, forever going west, playing with blending modes- something that is integral at each point of my practice before making the final images for the paintings and frequently used in the way I layer my video work.

“Autopia appears as the fourth ecology of the mysticism of the American megalopolis, described through the fine metaphor of the girl touching up her makeup on negotiating an exit ramp. Banham thus clearly marked the distances between the democratic condition of the flow and the totalitarianism of the traffic, revealing a new liberating freedom where movement ceases to occupy the secondary role that the Athens Charter had reserved for it, to go on to become the absolute protagonist of the contemporary metropolis.”

Alison Smithson- Autopia as a new perceptual regime: mobilized gaze and architectural design. Lots of thinking about how we are visualizing from a car and how much that impacts photography—since painting and printmaking for me are based in photography

Just Missed You, 2026

LA key in my hand with a NY skyline on the door/portal. Third image is not my work, but an oil on canvas work by James Rosenquist 1933–2017) that I really love.

“In Just Missed You, a hyperreal close-up shows a hand inserting a key into a polished brass door lock, set against a saturated, almost apocalyptic sunset where a distant city skyline dissolves into a haze of red and orange. A dangling “Sorry I Missed You” notice introduces, through the semiotic register of the written word, a narrative of absence, delay and missed connection that inflects the final reading of this image of the threshold between interior and exterior or presence and absence.“ - for

Thankful for steady hands

20 seconds out of one month of me working on
“Forever”

Last day to catch this piece in Semblance at that features my dad’s finger print as a postage stamp, a rose I couldn’t kill, my grandmothers handwriting on the last piece of mail I received from her “don’t bend photo”

Excited the work is off to a new home 💌

It’s rare to have the time and space to reflect in this way, and even rarer to encounter writing that meets the work with such care

Videos recorded and made in Miami (top screen begins with me spraying out a silksceeen at washing out blue emulsion on a yellow silksceeen, then a screen at a produce marker in Princeton FL after a day at the Everglades National park with Fountainhead residents and founders. The bottom video features a view from inside in June 2024 where catastrophic flooding trapped artists (quiet comfortably) inside the house (roads flooded)

Arco pump from LA, foliage painted in oil paint over top. hummingbird audio from Cuba 2022 and Los Angeles 2024. I always thought they sounded like little combustion engines or motorcycles when flying close by.

Thank you to my cat and her internal motor for providing the audio for this piece —

Do you like words or was that enough words for today? stop here if you had enough words.

⚡️✋🏽🚥🏁

Oil on glass animates the “object in mirror” handwriting throughout, along with the interspersed hearts, animated by hand and blended over video radiating from the center into a highway hypnosis pattern, along with a hook on a chain swinging back and forth like a hypnotist pendulum.

When the passenger side mirrors begin, mirror one shows Botox injections, and mirror two shows a video of a classic car repair using Bondo to fix the dents and imperfections on the car surface. This repair video is overlaid with one of the artist smearing bondo-colored clay facemasks where the car’s dent/repair is taking place.

These fade into footage of driving with views from the passenger side mirror, glinting sun, and receding signs into a more surreal non-window view of LA with unreliable horizons with palm trees, wrecking balls at construction sites, and reflections on the asphalt of the sunset, bright lights in fog, and then back to the orange and blue beach sunset that is blended behind the first part of the videos for a loop.

Thinking a lot about looking, looking again, perception, and growing older in a place. My idea of the female body, women’s beauty, and zoning out about deep things in traffic in the Subaru 🤷🏽‍♀️ but what do I know

Have fantasized about making this mantis for a few years- picked some chilly months in LA to need outdoor studio time. 1 min of sculpture process. This is the art that made me bleed. Was it worth making? Absolutely.
