The scene for ravers, shufflers and hard trance, hardstyle + hardcore enjoyers was very different in the early 2000s to 2010s. Itโd be a Saturday night at an event held at Sydney Olympic Park by Powerhouse Productions. In 2003, it was Utopia and then the years that followed, they gave Godspeed, Bass Control, Prophecy and Manic. Lowkey, I feel like these events became the heartbeat of an entire subculture.
Canterbury tracksuit. Sergio Tacchini. Striped Nautica polo. Nike TNs or ASICS KAYANOS. Honestly, thatโs how I remember how most of the lads dressed. Most of the lasses were in push-up tops, short shorts and Nike TNs or sometimes in a lewd cosplay. Canโt forget about the shufflers fit with the phat pants and neon or glow in the dark lights. Super tough stuff that you donโt see in todayโs scene at all โ is it almost like a lost art nowadays because I donโt really see any shufflers anymore? Multiple stages running simultaneously, each with its own sound and energy. Lasers cutting through a room packed with thousands of people and bass coming up through the floor. You had MCs trying to contain their respective stages โ some like it, others just wanted to listen to the music lol. But I guess this aspect isnโt much different to todayโs scene.
Also, super funny, but who remembers Godspeed were putting up notices banning lad clothing at the door. Something along the lines of โNo Lads or Lad Clothing Allowedโ?
The thing about these events is that it didnโt matter what suburb you were coming from. I feel confident to say that once the doors opened and you were in the event, everyone was the same. Like, the music just levelled everything out.
Man, waking up on Sundays was wild. Blinds shut. Phone ignored. Body somewhere between exhausted and still buzzing from the night before because you got home at like 1am or even 4am. That specific skat is its own kind of memory. You were lying still while the previous twelve hours played back on loop.
Would any of us do it again? I honestly feel like most would without a second thought.

Before e-bikes and e-scooters were even a thing, lads had their own solution. Motorised bikes or engine bikes = a fuel + engine kit strapped onto pushies that the lads called gassys.
Benny says that he got into the gassys by seeing lads in the housing commission estates at Prospect ripping through the park near the Great Western Highway, opposite Bunnings.
In Blacktown housing, we all had them. Iโd often be running mine through Walters Road on the way to Nurragingy, cutting through the Bunya backways. Back before they were made illegal in New South Wales, you could sometimes walk into a random local dodgy store and grab a 2-stroke motor converter kit on the spot - cheaper than buying a dirt bike. You could have a budget of $200 and be able to make a gassy happen.
But regardless of the costs, this was like your first car. You know how you have that pride and joy that comes with your first car? Same itshay here. Deck it out however youโd like: colour, exhaust for noise, rims and try to push the speed as high as possible. If gassys didnโt have heavy housing associations, honestly, these were young engineers in the making because it got you into understanding motor, welding and hood craftsmanship.
From the late 2000s through to around 2015, youโd regularly see lads tearing up Walters Road, Blacktown, right in front of Evans High School and Walters Road Primary School. Lads popping wheelies and then chilling at the shops about 20 metres away from the primary school.
Benny says that he remembers boys pulling up to Evans on pit bikes and PW50s. At one point in 2015 or 2016, either Evans or Walters was broken into over a weekend and whoever it was went ham on the open field in their gassys. You could tell because the soil was churned everywhere, chunks ripped up from what was obviously burnouts and skids in thin tyre marks that looked like a bicycle. Benny says that he ended up grabbing a Chinese dirt bike eventually but the gassy era came first.

Had to throw in a photo of Rops1 with Kerser at the end.
One of the brands that I always saw growing up was HENLEYS. It was a generational clothing brand because every ethnicity was wearing it: white lads and lasses to Lebos, Islanders and Asians. And nowadays, you donโt see anyone wearing HENLEYS at all. Lowkey feel like HENLEYS doesnโt get enough props because of how dominant Nautica was in Sydney streetwear/lad fashion. But at least you still see people wear Nautica now; just not at the same capacity and volume as it once was.
I remember back when I was living in Hurstville in 2004, there was an Urban Equipment store that you could cop HENLEYS from. Hereโs a hella niche one, how many of yall around Fairfield and Liverpool area would go to VBox Clothing to cop HENLEYS? I guess for others, youโd be going to Paulโs Warehouse, Sportless, Glue, Trade Secret, David Jones or some sports direct outlet kind of store. I personally felt like HENLEYS gave the lads an affordable fat branded tee to show off and style. There would always be cracker sale bundles for their pieces too across all retailers. For me, living in housing, it didnโt feel like you were overspending. It gave you something recognisable to everyone.
HENLEYS had a fat logo that took up 80% of the front of the tee. Either big cursive or bold letters with the iconic โ96โ that always followed. Sometimes the word โsportโ followed too. The sweatpants would have the logo cover an entire leg. Well, a bit of an exaggeration, but you could read the logo from 20 metres away because of how big it was.
Before Glueโs Central Park store closed down, they were selling HENLEYS tees for $10 and no one was buying it. No one was even looking at the tees. It was super sad to see. To be fair, the tees did look chat โ I remember there was a white tee with the big logo on the chest and then 3M reflective design around the tee. The other tees were just basic black tees with big logo on the chest. Every person that walked into the store legit just walked past the HENLEYS section, which was at the front of the second level. Like, the entire left side of the entry was just HENLEYS.
We tap in with who speaks to Sydney Graffers that changed the game.

From two primary school friends bonding over a shared love for heavy metal music to a five member band with a style rooted to the streets and culture.
Huge thank you to Andy for the opportunity to interview Alex from Malevolence, and allowing us to watch the band perform live at Leichhardt, Sydney. It was also our first time watching a metalcore band live. 100% huge vibe and such a dope experience!
Give their album a sus, Where Only The Truth Is Spoken. They will also be touring, joined by Speed throughout Europe in October-November.
