El macho es de color negro y se distingue por sus hombros rojo y amarillo.
Habita pantanos, campos muy húmedos y bordes de manglar. A menudo se encuentra en bandadas. Mide 23 cm.

La naturaleza siempre encuentra formas de sorprendernos 🩵
No sé si esta inusual coloración celeste en el pico y alrededor del ojo de este tucán pico iris se debe a una mutación genética, a algún factor relacionado con su alimentación o a otra condición particular. Lo que sí es cierto es que su apariencia es extraordinaria y difícil de ignorar.
Más allá de las posibles explicaciones, este individuo nos recuerda que cada ave tiene una historia única y que la naturaleza puede manifestarse de formas realmente fascinantes.

Su plumaje negro contrasta con el amarillo del cuello y pecho; su piel alrededor del ojo es verde, iris y tarsos azules, pico largo y aserrado color verde claro con una combinación de tonos azul y amarillo, destacando la punta de color anaranjado-rojizo.
Se alimenta de frutas principalmente. Son importantes agentes dispersores de semillas que ayudan a la regeneración de las selvas tropicales y de los hábitats en los que viven. Mide 46 cm.
Es el ave nacional de Belice.
