James and I were in the same year at Yarra Valley Grammar, performed together in school plays, and even ran cross country together—until, of course, he managed to get the first ever exemption from compulsory Saturday sport given his increasing music theatre commitments. Sitting side by side in the school orchestra, learning viola together, I witnessed firsthand his extraordinary musical talent. Even then, it was clear James was a once-in-a-generation musician.
That gift grew and flourished, leading him to astounding achievements as a composer, arranger, and musical director. James became a cornerstone of the music theatre world, working on productions like Chicago, Aladdin, Moulin Rouge and My Brilliant Career.
Today’s service, with performances by legends like Rhonda Burchmore and Marina Prior, was a testament to the profound impact James had on so many in the industry. I’m so proud of everything he achieved since high school. He was a force of creativity, kindness, dedication and inspiration.
My heart aches for his parents, Richard and Carol, his sister Kate, and his wonderful partner Mitch. James, I feel so incredibly lucky to have known you, to have shared so many of life’s milestones with you. Your absence is unimaginable, and I will miss you deeply. Rest easy, my beautiful friend. 💙
