After launching in Melbourne in 2023 and Sydney CBD in 2024, North Sydney is now the third Australian store and it did not disappoint.
Their signature is the Tori Paitan — a rich, creamy chicken broth ramen with house-made mochi wheat noodles that are unlike anything you’ll find in Sydney. The chashu is torch-seared right in front of you, perfectly pink with a caramelised edge. We also tried the Garlic Knockout spicy ramen loaded with kimchi, coriander and chilli oil — absolute fire.

The kids had a lot of fun grilling the gyukatsu themselves on the hot stone and trying the different condiments and dipping sauces, which made the whole experience feel really interactive and family-friendly.
The menu was slightly different from Japan, including Australian beef options, while still keeping the same Katsugyu-style experience we remembered from Kyoto. The gyukatsu was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and you could really taste the freshness and quality of the beef once it hit the hot stone.
The restaurant itself was also spacious with high ceilings, plenty of room for prams, and an overall child-friendly environment that made dining with kids feel comfortable. Being right in the heart of Sydney CBD also makes it really easy to access while exploring the city.
It was a little unfortunate that the Yebisu premium matcha beer we had in Japan wasn’t available here, however the Asahi Super Dry and lemon chuhai still paired fantastically with the gyukatsu and were really refreshing.
We also enjoyed mixing the miso and onsen egg through the rice at the end, and finishing with warabi mochi + kuromitsu syrup and matcha ice cream.
Nice to finally have the same Katsugyu experience from Japan here in Sydney.
