Shōtengai (商店街) are Japanese old-school shopping streets, traditionally leading to shrines and temples (and nowadays also to train stations)🚆. They are filled with a variety of shops, including fashion, household & thrift shops, drugstores, barbers and pachinko parlors, traditional cafes (kissaten) and restaurants as well as random shops owned by Japanese locals selling everything and anything they want (often including secondhand fashion). While you won’t find most of the big fashion chains, you will get a better feel for the neighborhood and it’s own pace 🙏. You can find several Shōtengai in Tokyo, but we really like the Sunroad shopping district in Kichijoji 👍. Just take a stroll around the train station and you will see several small restaurants selling their specialties with long lines of locals waiting, as well as cafes and izakayas inviting you to stay for a while and become a local yourself 😉.

One of the highest expenses during your Japan trip will be transportation. Using the metro in Tokyo can add up to a significant amount of money, especially when you are sightseeing. 💸 BUT there are many ways to save some money! As a foreign tourist you can purchase the Tokyo Subway Unlimited Pass. 🙏 With this pass you can take as many trains around Tokyo as you want to. With three options (24h, 48h, 72h) there is something for everybody. You can buy the Tokyo Subway Ticket as long as you have a passport from overseas. There are ticket counters in airports, major subway stations anybody stops once at least for traveling Tokyo and electronic retail stores. For users of Narita Airport or Haneda Airport, it’s the most recommendable to purchase the ticket in the airports. Save some money and spend it for some nice sushi! 👌🍣 Tag a friend who would appreciate this information 👇

Ginza (銀座) is Tokyo's most famous “fancy” shopping, dining and entertainment district, featuring numerous department stores, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, night clubs and cafes. If you like shopping and luxury, then this is the place to go! 💸 Most shops in Ginza district are open every day of the week. We recommend a visit on the weekend afternoons when the central Chuo Dori street is closed for automobile traffic and becomes a large pedestrian zone. The road closure takes place from 12:00 to 17:00! Tag a friend who would like to go shopping in Tokyo! 👇

Gaming arcades are a must-visit on your trip to Japan. While you can find them in any city, Anata No Warehouse in Kawasaki, Tokyo is one of a kind: it is build after the original walled city of Kowloon 🇭🇰 with dimmed lights and sound effects on every of its 5 levels. It’s haunting design leads you from the daytime streets of Kawasaki to step into the small & dark alleys of Kowloon. Even if you are not an avid gamer, this place is worth a visit! While you are charged a few ¥100 per game 🎰🕹, the entry itself is completely free. Being solely for those above 18 y/o, this place is the most scary version you can imagine and makes for a fun activity on rainy days or in the evening! Are you adding this place to your list or is it too scary for you? 😈😉

If you ask us, the best way to explore Tokyo is definitely by foot 👣. We love to take our time strolling through new neighborhoods and discovering hidden streets - like this one that we stumbled upon while walking through the old Yanesen area near Ginza 👁. If you want to maximize your time in Tokyo but still want to explore more by foot, we recommend joining one of the many free (!)👍 walking tours! They usually offer to take you around a specific area, like the Yanesen area in the old Shitamachi town📸 or even Tsukiji 🍣 outer market, Imperial Palace or Akihabara Electric Town🤖. These tours are completely free of charge, take 2h on average and you get to meet a local 🧑🏻who shows you around his neighborhood and will be able to answer all your burning questions about the Japanese culture 👏! Join the tours by “Tokyo Free Walking Tour“, the “Tokyo SCG Club“ or “Tokyo Localized“, to name a few of the tour guides. Have you ever done a free walking tour in Japan and what was your experience? 👇

Are you curious to meet some locals during your trip to Japan 🎌? It’s not always easy to connect if you are constantly traveling and not staying in hostels or homestays. If you travel to Osaka, you will quickly realize that people here are very open and happy to chat to strangers about their day and life anytime, be it in the train 🚃 or one of the many izakayas 🍻. Last time that we stayed in Osaka, we explored the area around Temma Station with its many yokochos (drinking alleys) and izakayas. If you want to know more about this area or what to do in Osaka, then have a look at our blogpost 💻 which includes 1, 2 and 3 day itineraries (link in bio)! On your trip, did you notice how open and curious thebpeople from Osaka are to meet foreigners? 👇

In Japan and in Indonesia, gates like these ⛩ present the entrance to the spiritual or sacred world 🌏. When we look at traveling, the gate to exploring a new country definitely is affordable transportation ✈️. We would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts: they enabled us to fly out to Bali and meet our friends 🏄‍♂ - most of whom we hadn’t seen in over a year 👯‍♀. Which country in Asia should we fly to next? 🤔👇

Summer in Tokyo is slowly coming to an end - which means autumn is just around the corner! It’s less hot these days which makes September a great month for hiking 👣🧗‍♂. There are a number of mountains surrounding Tokyo that make for great day trips (Mount Mitake, Mount Takao etc.) and onsen towns like Hakone and Nikko that are the perfect spots for a weekend getaway. From late September until early October you can usually already enjoy Japan’s colorful autumn leaves (called “koyo”) 🍁🍂 in the Japanese Alps around Nagano & Hakuba near Tokyo, or more towards the North of Japan in Niseko, Iwate or Tochigi. We cannot wait to see Japan in its autum beauty again 😍. Have you ever visited Japan during autumn?

We are back in Japan 🎌! The first thing we do when we are back in Tokyo after traveling is to catch up with friends and eat good food 🍻😉. This time we went for Shabu Shabu which is a Japanese version of hot pot with paper thin slices of meat and fresh veggies cooked in an open pot in front of you🤤. It’s a great Japanese dish to eat in a group of friends or family because you sit around the pot and cook your food together, drinking beer and talking for hours 🗣. What’s the first thing you do when you are back home after a trip?

After 1.5 months of traveling through Indonesia, our trip is coming to an end. For us, it’s important to take time to explore a new country and discover its culture 🌏📷. We like to stay in one place for a longer time so we are able to make new friends and truly get to know them. In Indonesia, everybody we met has been super kind and helpful 🧡 and at we felt right at home - as you can see judged on our big smiles 😉. When you plan your trips, how much time to you usually take to discover a new country and culture?
.
(PS: We would also always recommend taking at least 2 weeks to explore Japan, and to explore one region well instead of simply ticking off many cities.)
