Ciudad Juárez is one of the most dangerous cities in the world for women. For decades, disappearances and murders have shaped the city. Fear of violence restricts the everyday lives of many women. But there is group of women that refuses to hide: The Luchadoras of Ciudad Juárez.

From today, the pictures are exhibited at FREELENS gallery in Hamburg as part of Hamburg Portfolio Review.

I love outdoor exhibitions, they’re free to visit, open to everyone, and the work becomes part of everyday life.
It is great to be exhibiting next to amazing photographers like, whose work about the Mexican border connects so beautifully with mine, and, whose work I’ve loved for years. I finally met her in person for the first time and immediately fell in love with her. 🫶

Luchadora Zafiro in her wrestling gear, standing in front of the border wall that separates Mexico from the United States.
In front of her lies Ciudad Juárez — a place marked by femicide and extreme violence against women. Behind her, on the other side of the border, is El Paso, Texas, a city widely considered one of the safest places in the US.
Zafiro lives between these two worlds.
She crosses the border every day. While she raises her four daughters in El Paso, her mother runs a wrestling arena in Ciudad Juárez. She fights in the ring, but also outside of it: for women’s rights, for visibility, and for the right to take up space.
For the past four years, I have been documenting the Luchadoras of Ciudad Juárez: a small group of women who step into the wrestling ring in one of the world’s most violent places and challenge machismo, gender roles and social expectations with their bodies, their characters and their voices.

Today’s second artist is, a German photographer focused on gender equality and amplifying underrepresented voices. Her project, Between Blood and Glitter, selected through the Global Open Call, follows a resilient group of female wrestlers, known as Luchadoras, living in Ciudad Juárez, located on the U.S.-Mexico border, who defy societal norms by stepping into the wrestling ring.
This weekend I won first place at the with my series ‚Between Blood and Glitter‘ about female wrestlers in Ciudad Juárez, a city marked for decades by its high femicide rates.
The last days in Siena were unforgettable, I met so many amazing people from all over the world. Photographers whose work I’ve admired, who are not only brilliant artists but also warm and generous. And then suddenly, during the ceremony, I was called to the entrance of the hall as one of the finalists. My heart was racing, I was so nervous. So many incredible photographers were nominated in the category ‚Storytelling - Daily Life and Contemporary Issues‘, and every single one of them deserved to win.
Thank you to the heroines of my story, the Luchadoras of Juárez - without you I wouldn’t have been up there. I can’t wait to see you again in October.

Two years ago, I started documenting a group of fearless women in Ciudad Juárez – one of the most dangerous places in the world.
Over 2,500 women have been murdered in the past three decades. Hundreds are still missing.
But every weekend, a small group of female wrestlers refuses to disappear.
Wearing glittering costumes, the Luchadoras step into the ring.
Their fights are more than entertainment. They fight for freedom.
I’m deeply grateful for this recognition and more motivated than ever to keep telling their story.
