That permission to wander. To take up space. To book the trip. To go outside. To try the thing with no guarantee you’ll be good at it. To move through the world like nobody ever told you no.
I wasn’t raised like that.
I was raised on a different list.
Work twice as hard. Don’t mess this up. Be grateful. Be careful. Be excellent. Don’t fumble the opportunity.
And listen… some of that saved me.
But some of it also taught me to wait for permission I was never going to get.
So I stopped waiting.
I started going places I had never seen Black men in the brochures.
I started saying yes to rooms, trails, countries, mountains, snow, silence, adventure, and joy that I used to think belonged to somebody else.
And somewhere between dog sledding across the Arctic Circle, standing in Morocco, hiking through national parks, and learning to take up space without apologizing…
I realized the only permission I needed was my own.
I used to call it white boy freedom.
Now I call it mine.

And tell me this: what would your life look like if you stopped waiting for permission?
I knew about the bourbon, the horses, and the Derby, but nobody told me Lexington had all this Black excellence sitting right in plain sight.
The food at had me paying attention early. I still want to know who made these greens, because I’m still thinking about them.
Then we stopped by, and I loved what they’re building. Yes, it’s a Black-owned grocery store, but they’re doing way more than that. They’re supporting Black farmers, feeding the community, and making fresh, affordable food more accessible.
That’s Black economics right there.
Then showed me what Black ownership looks like in bourbon country. Beautiful tasting room, great hospitality, dope story, and an experience that made me appreciate Kentucky bourbon in a whole new way.
And had me feeling like the Fresh Prince pulling up to Uncle Phil’s estate in the countryside.
Land. Wine. Horses. Whiskey. Hospitality. All of it.
What I loved most is that this wasn’t just “go here, eat this, take a picture.”
It felt like Black folks were building everywhere I looked.
And this is only part one.

Social media will have you thinking everybody has their whole life together.
Meanwhile, some of us are out here dog sledding across the Arctic Circle with laundry in the dryer from last Tuesday, a check engine light on, and a registration we put “somewhere safe.”
And by “some of us,” I mean me.
I love a good adventure, but please don’t let these pretty travel videos fool you. Nobody’s life is perfect. We all got something waiting on us when we get back home.
The goal isn’t to be reckless.
The goal is to stop thinking every part of your life has to be perfectly organized before you let yourself make a memory.
So yeah, handle your business.
But also go outside.

Not in a panic way. More like… am I actually living, or just trying to make it to Friday?
A few weeks ago, I wrote about losing my mom, grief, family, and how quickly life can change. Since then, I keep asking myself one question:
What am I still postponing?
So yes, I took my Black behind dog sledding across the Arctic Circle.
Was I prepared? Define prepared. I had snacks, layers, and audacity.
But this trip reminded me that one day, all of us become stories. And I want mine to be more than work, bills, and waiting on “one day.”

There is no amount of words that can truly describe how much my mom meant to me or the impact she had on my life. She was my safe place, my biggest supporter, my prayer warrior, my favorite human, and one of the funniest people I’ve ever known.
These past few days have been some of the most difficult of my life, but they have also been some of the clearest reminders of God’s goodness. Through every hug, every prayer, every meal, every text message, every phone call, and every person who showed up for our family, God has reminded me that His love often shows up through people and that I’ll never walk this journey alone.
One of my mom’s favorite sayings was, “Let your light shine. Don’t try to make it shine.”
It’s something she modeled every day of her life, and a lesson I’ll carry with me forever. Her light continues to shine through me, my siblings, her grandchildren, and the countless lives she touched along the way.
My heart is full.
I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who has prayed for us, checked on us, traveled to be with us, shared memories, and loved on our family during this season. Even when I didn’t have the capacity to respond, please know that I saw it, I felt it, and I appreciate it more than words can express.
I’m honored to be her son.
She always told me, “A part of me goes along with you. A part of you goes along with me.” I feel that more than ever now.
I’ll forever be your precious baby.

Remember when it snowed, and school got canceled? Nobody had a plan — you just knew you were going outside.
Now we just plan the snow day.
Jesse and I pulled up to WinterFest at Eldora Mountain, and it turned into a whole winter playground — snowboarding runs, live music, food, gear demos, and a community of people who decided winter isn’t something you wait out… It’s something you experience.
Real talk — I didn’t grow up doing winter sports. But once I stepped out of my comfort zone, I realized the mountains don’t care where you’re from. They’re just waiting on you to show up.
And having the right setup makes all the difference. The Subaru handled those snowy mountain roads like it was built for it.
