When Mateo’s year 11 teacher encouraged him to attend a dance workshop, in 2018, he followed a path that led him to become a professional dancer... and his family’s “black sheep that left for the arts”.
“I did [the workshop] for a week … and they said, ‘Oh, you should go to NAISDA’, the dance college which Bangarra stemmed from … I went to the audition, and couldn’t touch my toes, didn’t know any dance vocab and miraculously got in. From there I fell in love with dance,” he says.
Born to Gomeroi and Tongan parents in Orange, in central-western NSW, Mateo grew up learning about the negative stereotypes that beset his community – as well as facing them. It’s what inspired Mateo’s short film Brown Boys, which is the second of three performances in Indigenous dance company Bangarra’s latest program, Sheltering.
“So many stereotypes and stigmas fall onto my family by default, and my family is riddled with all the atrocities of suicide, of incarceration, all of these kinds of heavy things,” he says.
“I wanted this film to really be a beacon of hope for brown boys who had the same lived experiences that I had, and hopefully, they can be able to … start the conversations to define themselves.”
Brown Boys is a dance film directed by Mateo and Cass Mortimer Eipper that blends dance, narrative and cinema. Along with the other two shows in the program, Keeping Grounded and Sheoak, the performance will honour the late David Page, acclaimed composer and musical director of Bangarra Dance Theatre.

Bangarra’s Sheltering will be at the Sydney Opera House from June 3 to 13, and at Melbourne’s Arts Centre from June 18 to 27.
They were guests to Australia with the Australian Academy of Science as part of an assistance package to allow them to continue their work while the war continues. Much of their visit focused on canola production and research for this crop, which is the No. 2 oilseed crop grown globally. Both Australia and Ukraine are significant global players in the production of canola. Ukraine is a major supplier of canola to the EU.

Her ground-breaking work changed the field of primatology. Her research in Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania in the 1960s shone a light on the secret world of chimpanzees. She discovered that humankind’s closest relatives have pronounced personalities, minds and emotions and can form significant and complex relationships.
“Chimps, like us, are very aggressive but are also quick to make peace and make sure the rift is healed. We could learn a lot from that,” she once said.
Last year she visited where she visited participants of the Youth At The Zoo and Roots and Shoots programs.
All three photographs were made at the chimpanzee’s enclosure. The last Dr Goodall is pictured with Richard Buzzas, supervisor of Primates at the zoo.

It was not meant to be. The public chose Anthony Albanese, delivering him a second term. Not only did the Coalition lose the election but Mr Dutton lost his seat of Dickson which he’d held since 2001. Labor secured 94 seats in the House of Representatives—the highest number of seats ever won by a single political party in an Australian election.
As writer describes the ex Queensland copper turned politician in his 2024 Quarterly Essay ‘Bad Cop’, Peter Dutton is someone who “… views the world with the pessimism of a Russian novelist.”
It was this pessimism that ensured Dutton’s failure to unite the nation, or to form a narrative that was good enough to give him a chance to lead.

“My lovely little son was born with quite a complex heart defect that was picked up in utero, the 20-week scan. And so, my pregnancy, my first child, the journey was quite different. There’s so much about it that was normal and joyful, but there was just a lot of terror and anxiety around it.”
In August 2024, when George was five months old, he underwent five hours of open-heart surgery and spent 11 days recovering at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
“I was so sad and so scared that I just thought, ‘Oh, I guess I can’t ever do comedy again.’ How can I marry these two parts of myself, like, being silly and irreverent, and then dealing with the heaviest, saddest thing possible?’
“This show was written in the times when things were improving. And now, he’s recovered fully, he’s doing so well. I’ll always worry, but life is pretty good. And returning to stand-up feels like things are normal again.”
