“Through his focus on the relationship between choreography and architecture, James Batchelor understands and works with the proscenium as frame, border, wall, window and mirror. However, while recognising Canberra’s Playhouse as a proscenium venue, he approaches its stage primarily as an expansive landscape to be filled up and emptied by performing bodies. These bodies moving in and out of direct view have a reciprocal relationship with the architecture. The dancers make the built environment conspicuously present, just as it structures how they move and how the audience receives such movement. Video from a creative development at the Canberra Playhouse in 2018 with the support of Canberra Theatre Centre and Arts ACT. Later developed as a full-length work for Quantum Leap Australia.
Hyperspace extends the trilogy that began with Deepspace (2016) and Redshift (2017), continuing an investigation into scale, perception, and the relationship between the body and the cosmos.
From the human body to the universe, the work examines the metrics we use to measure the unknown. The choreography bends and stretches the material of the body until it appears both microscopic and vast. In parallel, Morgan Hickinbotham’s score deepens his sonic exploration of space and distance — moving between granular textures and expansive reverberations to create an immersive environment in which the choreography orbits.
Since premiering in Bassano del Grappa in 2018, Hyperspace has toured extensively across Europe, the UK, Scandinavia, and Asia, including presentations at KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin), Aerowaves Twenty, and festivals and theatres in Paris, London, Oslo, Glasgow, and Taipei. The work continues to evolve through performance, with sound remaining central to its identity.
Recorded live and mastered at andereBaustelle Sound Studio in Berlin (2025), this release marks the second on Music For Movement — a label dedicated to experimental contemporary dance scores.

A solo in many voices: ‘Notes of Self’ is an intimate blend of intellect and emotion that opens new pathways to dance for audiences of all ages.
The work is inspired by Batchelor’s research into the diasporic history of Ausdruckstanz in Australia and his current engagement with children through the Initiative LUNA PARK in Berlin. Century-old avant-garde tradition meets the playful movement of children and creates a performance that is both historically aware and radically present.
