Personally I find the act of working from life to be an act of reverence for the divine: a meditation on nature and the gift of existence, unfiltered and unparsed by a mechanical intermediary. Intention is everything so I personally feel that its okay as long as it is done respectfully. Just wish I had a second session on this one.

This whole experience has affirmed what I felt about South African identity, regardless of race: much like painting, all edges bleed into one another, making us who we are. What separates me from other first language English speakers is that I, and others like me, have grown up among the diverse peoples of this country, who have shaped the way I talk, think and act.

My final project at The Florence Academy of Art, painted over five weeks from life.
While I have spoken before about the cards laid out on the table - The Fool, The Queen of Swords and The Magician - I intentionally left the last card hidden, so you the viewer can insert any card they like into her hand.
On reflection, after drawing this chapter of my life to a close and before stepping out into a new year, I'd like for that last card to be The World.

This is a deeply personal still life, and my last painting at The Florence Academy of Art. It features a cast by Gemito of "il Malatiello" (the sick boy), nestled against Protea flowers. Proteas are the national symbol of South Africa and the king of Fynbos, Capensis, the smallest of only six floral kingdoms in the world, and endemic only to The Western Cape of South Africa. The boy is wrapped in raw linen, used both for treating wounds and painting on.
This work can be interpreted in a personal manner, with the boy representing the inner child, or in a broader context relating to South Africa, where the cast's whiteness and the work's title take on new meaning. I would have been a similar age to this boy when apartheid ended in 1994.
