There’s a lot of fear being stoked around the No campaign to scare voters into remaining apathetic.
No means a step backwards. No means that modern Australia still isn’t ready to acknowledge its dark past and move forward towards a more equitable future.
The No campaign’s slogan of, ‘If you don’t know, vote no’, is a plea for Australians to remain ignorant, and to allow fear and uncertainty to define the future. It’s the responsibility of all Australians to learn about what this decision means and to be able to cast an informed vote.
The outcome of this vote will be a loud and clear message to government, to all young Australians, and to the international community about what kind of nation Australia aspires to be. Most importantly, it will be a message to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about how much society values them.
What will that message be? Will Australia take a step towards a better future, or will it continue to ignore the deep social inequality that exists for so many?
