«ABSTRACT
Background:
Research has shown that psychedelics may have therapeutic potential in treating mental disorders like depression and anxiety. However, the mechanisms and actions underlying their effects are still not
fully understood. Similarly, while the significance of mindset and setting in shaping psychedelic experiences
and therapeutic outcomes is well established, information about the influence of the body is comparatively
scarce.
Aim:
This paper introduces the concept of bodyset, defined as the state of the body, including both the body and brain. We suggest it as a vital element in preparing for psychedelic experiences and beyond,
broadening the traditional ‘set and setting’ framework.
Methods:
Through an extensive literature review, we demonstrate the likely importance of the body in wellbeing, peak performance and peak experiences.
Results:
Comprehensive multidisciplinary research, particularly focusing on various biomarkers, is needed to elucidate the potential role of bodyset in the psychedelic experience and therapy outcomes, and to guide
future treatment approaches for mental health disorders.
Conclusion:
Our exploration of the bodyset concept emphasizes the importance of considering not only psychological and environmental factors (mindset & setting), but also the physical state of the body in preparation for psychedelic experiences and psychedelic
therapy. This holistic perspective may enhance our comprehension of their effects, therapeutic potential and inform the application of other treatment modalities, such as breathwork, in mental health care.»

Precisely 20 years ago I made the most important decision of my life
I left Italy for London
I couldn’t speak English, there was no smartphone or Google Map, Whatsapp, Instagram or Facebook. The internet was barely useful. I relied on the paper based Tube map, the London A/Z and needed to translate word by word on my pocket dictionary. I could only communicate with my family by email or very expensive international payphone cards
In retrospect this feels terrifying, but back then it was a chronic dissociative panic experience
I arrived a few days after the Russell Square tube station bombings, this made it all ever so slightly more surreal. You could still smoke in pubs and clubs, even though back then I didn’t drink nor smoke, it made London as gritty as we were always told in Italy. Paired with my total isolation from my native homeland, it plunged me into an alien world full of wonder and full of danger. Barely days into it I was jumped by an American tourist in the street in broad daylight, I didn’t particularly mind as she was quite attractive and only wanted to make out. The same night a random man offered me an unsolicited lift in his car, I was so pleased with the generosity, he also tried to sexually assault me mid ride, I did mind that one, and promptly ejected myself somewhere unknown in zone 1
I had 6 weeks to learn English from zero before starting university there in Biology and Chemistry. Due to sheer desperation I first decided to be in a youth hostel, not enough good English speakers there, I pivoted to roomshare with two other people in a single occupancy room in a small flat cramped with 5 more, at the very least 2 of them were native English speakers. I also quickly learned I was the only heterosexual one, which explained why they were so friendly. That worked wonders for my English, but I would spare your imagination from whatever else I was also exposed to on a daily basis
While this was a wild start, I could never imagine the otherworldliness that followed thereafter, spanning the whole planet many times over
I will be forever grateful to my father (here pictured) for believing I would survive
