The birthplace of the first public Iyengar Yoga Class in the UK.

This week, shared an episode about Mr and Mrs Angadi and their remarkable role in shaping the creative and cultural landscape of the 1960s.

The first UK Iyengar Yoga class was taught by B.K.S. Iyengar in the Angadis’ London home. A spark that helped the method spread across the West.

The Angadis also ran the Asian Music Circle, a cultural hub where Indian classical musicians met leading Western artists. Through this connection, Ravi Shankar went on to collaborate with the Beatles.

It was here, in this unlikely cultural crossroads, that the first public Iyengar Yoga class in the UK was born.

We’re sharing once again Korinna Pilafidis Williams’ piece, The First Public Iyengar Yoga Class in the UK.

Read about Korinna’s discovery of the house and how it came to host the first Iyengar Yoga class in the UK on 19 June 1961.

The article is taken from Dipika, The Iyengar Yoga London Journal, Issue No. 53, July 2021.

We also ran the article. If you are a member of IY(UK) you can find the article we ran in Iyengar Yoga News Issue 39, Autumn 2021. Log in to the members area and you can get access to all the archive magazines.

December’s theme of peace is beautifully reflected in one of yoga’s most familiar recitations: the Śhānti Mantra.
Chanted in many Iyengar Yoga classes, it offers a moment of grounding, connection, and shared intention, especially at this reflective time of year.

This translation is from Gitte Beschard

Why chant shānti three times?

• Peace within ourselves — quieting the mind and easing inner tension.
• Peace in our surroundings — harmony in our connections and environment.
• Peace beyond our control — acceptance of the wider forces shaping our lives.

As we approach the end of the year, may this December bring you moments of deep, steadying shānti, in your practice, your home, and your heart.

Here is one of our teachers and a winter sequence Clare has illustrated and details about how it’s helped her practice.
“It’s winter, no one told you it gets harder 😂 but this stiffness will pass I’m convinced. Last week I read Mobility and Stability again by Geeta Iyengar and pushed the obstacle of doubt, samsaya, aside. I know I’m not the only doubter, my yoga students feel it too. And winter hits, the body gets cooler, stiffer and then I read this: “suppose if something is not correct, we should be prepared to give it up right away, and we should be quick enough to accept that which is correct. That is mobility. And that is how the consciousness has to be modified. Because it is very quick to catch some modifications. Vrttis, such as wrong things, wrongdoings wrong habits wrong approaches erroneous thoughts etc, we need to remove these wrong, bad and unwanted attitudes fast. And when we bring this kind of balance, then comes stability. The mobility is essential to bring stability and this stability is essential to bring mobility. The mobility is hidden instability and the stability is hidden in mobility”. I pondered on this for a while then moved in ways, with the right breath at the right time and removed the stiffness, the doubt and moved in ways I’d not moved in a while. There’s always a prop to bring about the physical stability too, (thanks Mr Iyengar), because “the physical stability alone will establish the mental stability. The mental stability consists of intellectual and emotional stability” Geeta Iyengar.
