Mamarracho is a series of painting / sculptures that I started for my first solo exhibition with named “Caliente”, back in 2011, and since then accompanied me in several institutional and gallery shows at and.
“Mamarracho” in Spanish can mean doodle or something or someone messy. In this ongoing series, these almost random gestures with oversized lines spill beyond the canvas, becoming objects when they go out of the frame, blurring the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and installation.
The series echo my film Retouch (2008), a 12 second video shot at the Centre Pompidou, where I sprayed over two framed painting by Piet Mondrian (no paintings were damaged!). It also inspired many other works like “A Common Path”, presented at the in 2024.
For me, Mamarrachos works as an allegory of the way I work and I approach an issue, or a site. I like to behave freely, go in and out disregarding boundaries, but at the same time making the inside and the outside part of a whole that works together.
This series has been evolving, adapting to different architectures and places. I am currently preparing new works that pushes the series into new chapters! More news on this soon!

Iván Argote
Né en 1983 à Bogotá, Iván Argote vit et travaille à Paris. Son travail explore les liens entre mémoire, pouvoir et espace public à travers la sculpture, la vidéo et la performance.
Il a participé à plusieurs expositions internationales majeures, notamment à la Biennale de Lyon, au Palais de Tokyo, à la Galerie Rudolfinum (Prague), au MASP (São Paulo) et au MAMBO – Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá.
Installée au bord du bassin du Hangar Y, l’œuvre “Who?” représente une paire de bottes monumentales en bronze, comme abandonnées par une figure disparue. Évoquant une statue ancienne sectionnée au niveau des genoux, l’œuvre suggère une présence absente et interroge l’identité de celui ou celle qui occupait autrefois cette position de pouvoir.
Par ce fragment énigmatique, Iván Argote fait écho aux déboulonnages contemporains de monuments liés à des figures controversées, notamment dans le contexte des héritages coloniaux.
En laissant subsister seulement les bottes, symbole d’autorité et de domination, l’artiste invite à reconsidérer les récits historiques et les figures que l’espace public choisit de célébrer — ou d’effacer.

Masterclass with IVÁN ARGOTE
The School of Public Affairs of Sciences Po and the Cultural Policy Policy stream are pleased to invite Iván Argote, contemporary multimedia artist, for a Masterclass in conversation with Paul Max Morin, author and Doctor in Political Science, and Spencer White, student in the Cultural Policy Policy stream.
Iván Argote is a contemporary multimedia artist whose work explores the dynamics of public space and collective memory. Through sculpture, public installation, film, painting, and performance, Argote challenges dominant narratives with a blend of critique, humor, and tenderness that encourages reflection and constructive dialogue. By inviting audiences to rethink relationships between power and place, Argote’s work steers us toward new futures based on care and mutual respect.

Yesterday, pigeon aficionados “flocked” to the High Line’s Spur for #FarewellDinosaurNYC—a celebratory send-off of ’s larger-than-life pigeon sculpture, “Dinosaur.”
Parkgoers showed up and showed out! Attendees got an up-close visit with “Dinosaur” and dressed in their best plumage alongside, danced the afternoon away with, tested their pigeon knowledge with, and stocked up on “Dinosaur” merch (stay tuned for future opportunities soon-to-relaunch High Line Shop).
To our fellow New Yorkers, thank you for being the best flock we could ever ask for. Your embrace of this artwork has been a tremendous source of joy across the city, and we’re equally thrilled to welcome our fifth Plinth commission onto the park later this spring.

Radical Tenderness re discuss the politics of representation in public spaces, with a rebel and joyful sprit, that empowers civic and symbolic actions. It also frontally criticizes the colonial legacy using affection, humor and tenderness.
A special attention is dedicated to the series of children protest workshops “Activissime!!”, that I have been developing for the past 15 years in several countries across the Americas, Africa and Europe. I present for the first time a selection of archives in an ambitious and playful display. Of course we did a new children protest in Prague!
This exhibition is very special and dear to me, a beautiful reunion of stories and exciting new paths in my work. “Dinosaur” celebrates an iconic yet often overlooked figure of New York: the pigeon. These remarkable birds have lived alongside us for thousands of years, serving as prestigious pets, soldiers, and messengers—and yet, they are also seen as a pest. Pigeons are magnificent animals—intelligent, careful, and loyal. What if we celebrated them and integrated them with dignity into the narratives of our cities?
A huge thank you to the entire High Line team, especially Jordan Benke, to my gallery for being closely involved throughout the process.
