We're all smiles thinking about last week’s 23rd Annual Jack and Sabina Frew Lecture featuring keynote speaker Jaimie Henderson, MD. Henderson delivered a fascinating presentation on the future of brain-computer interfaces — groundbreaking assistive technologies that are transforming care for people who have lost the ability to speak or move because of neurodegenerative diseases, neurological disorders or traumatic brain injuries.
Congrats to medical student Noah Burkett, a member of Jignesh Tailor, MD, PhD's lab, who was awarded a F30 grant from the National Institutes of Health! These funds will be used to help fund his research, "Leveraging a neuroepithelial stem cell model to determine regulators of differentiation failure in NF2-mutant neural progenitors." Great work, Noah!
Thank you to all who joined us in-person and virtually for the Department of Neurological Surgery and Indiana University Health Foundation’s 23rd Annual Jack and Sabina Frew Lecture! Keynote speaker Jaimie Henderson, MD, gave an engaging presentation titled “Recent Advances in Intracortical Brain-Machine Interfaces.”

Henderson is the John and Jene Blume—Robert and Ruth Halperin Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, directs the stereotactic and functional neurosurgery program and co-directs the Stanford Neural Prosthetics Translational Laboratory. He is one of the world’s foremost experts on the application of image-guided surgical techniques to functional neurosurgical procedures such as the placement of deep brain stimulators for movement disorders, epilepsy, pain and psychiatric diseases.
Since 2010, 39 students have been awarded the Goodman Scholarship, which is awarded to fourth-year medical students at the IU School of Medicine who have financial need and match for neurosurgery residency training.

When Luke McVeigh, MD, found out he had been selected as one of three recipients in 2023, he said he was both shocked and grateful to be given the scholarship in honor of Goodman.

“Dr. Goodman is a legend in Indiana and nationally. He is the founder of the oral boards course that literally every resident in the country takes,” McVeigh said. “It was awesome to be recognized and carry on his name as a scholar.”

We're celebrating basic scientists Xiang Gao, PhD, Lingxiao Deng, PhD, and their lab teams for the recent publication of "Repurposing Dexmedetomidine: Early Pharmacological Hypothermia Enhances Neuroprotection and Improves Locomotor and Bladder Functional Recovery after Spinal Cord Injury" in The Journal of Neuroscience, the official journal of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN)! 👏 The paper explores the therapeutic potential of combining dexmedetomidine with hypothermia as a treatment for spinal cord injury.

The scholarship, named in honor of the late Julius M. Goodman, MD, one of the country’s top neurosurgeons, is awarded to fourth-year medical students at the IU School of Medicine who have financial need and match for neurosurgery residency training.

Brown and Line will join the IU School of Medicine’s Department of Neurosurgery as PGY1 residents in July and Visconti will begin neurosurgery residency training at Case Western Reserve University.

Skull Base Division Chief João Paulo Almeida, MD, PhD, and research fellows part of the Microneurosurgical Skull Base Lab recently attended a microneurosurgery live course at Arkansas Neuroscience Institute. Dr. Almeida gave a presentation on pituitary surgery and participated in discussions related to different topics in microneurosurgery.
Kudos to Angela Richardson, MD, PhD, for her leadership in the recent inaugural Stryker and Women in Neurosurgery (WINS) Senior Resident Course in Open Skull Base Surgery! Dr. Richardson served as the faculty director for the advanced course designed to provide immersive training in open skull base surgery through cadaveric dissection, case-based discussions and expert-led instruction.
