hello 6, 7 and 8 november i will be at cairocomix inshallah god and printer willing. this year me and are hosting prints from some guests of honor at our booth, artists from gaza and sudan whose work spans illustration, cartoons and comics! there will also be some shubeik lubeik stuff etc. i have nothing new to offer. booth will have some great stuff tho. come by!
The full letters, and full illustrations, will also be available to read soon. But until then, we leave you with just a small glimpse of the past two years for my friends.
while i appreciated some of my professors and many of my classmates i am not proud of the global journalism half of this degree. studying journalism at an american institution became so shameful to me i found it difficult to enter the building. we were encouraged to do good journalism but taught by example how to ignore that in order to become successful. careerism took precedent over values, strategic neutrality over real reporting, and all of this added up to an environment where professors & the administration could not address the world to their students. in a journalism department, this is unforgivable. being racist and callous does not create the mythical journalistic objectivity but merely increases bias. their journalism and the quality of our education was poorer for it.
since graduating, i have only grown more ashamed, frustrated & saddened by how western journalists abandoned palestinian journalists and the truth. they undermined the integrity of their own field to encourage a world where journalists can be hunted for sport simply for doing their jobs. today on my 31st birthday, an entire aljazeera crew was killed by the entity next door, including beloved journalists anas al-sharif and mohamed qurqeiy. so the mass murder, bombing & ethnic cleansing to follow can be done without witnesses. this is what the great institution of american journalism has justified, defended & downplayed for the 2 years of my time there.
i hate the world you’ve created. thankfully i’m a cartoonist & under no obligation to pretend to be a lobotomized stenographer with no conviction. will continue to try to change it
I started working on this project a few months ago. I handed it in sometime in March. Today all I can think about, in a project celebrating food (and particularly Nabulsi kunafa) that no food and no aid has entered غza since March 2nd. This week the Independent reported that children are losing their eyesight due to malnourishment. I wish this was coming out in better times, and I wish we lived in a world where food was not used as a weapon of war.
When I first read this comic and its script, I briefly wondered why they chose to write a story about a fictional student named Farah whose life and experience is close to their own. However, as I reached the end, I understood why. This is a work with many layers and an obvious request. I share it with you in hopes you share it with those who might need to read it.
