Animal Rights Village is one of the few farm animal sanctuaries in Japan, located in the countryside of Chiba.
The sanctuary was started by animal advocates who kept coming across animals in need of rescue through their work against factory farming. What began with the rescue of a single blind hen eventually grew into a safe home for rescued chickens and pigs.
Today, the sanctuary provides lifelong care for these animals while continuing to work toward a future where animals no longer have to be rescued from the farming industry in the first place.
Caring for large animals is a huge undertaking. The five pigs living here eat 18 cups of rice every day, along with lots of vegetables and fruit! ๐ฑ
One thing I really appreciate is that the sanctuary puts the animals first. Itโs not set up as a tourist attraction, but as a peaceful place where rescued animals can simply live out the rest of their lives safely. Because of that, visits are generally not offered, and volunteer opportunities are limited and only available from time to time.
If youโd like to support them, please consider giving them a follow and making a donation if youโre able to. Sanctuaries like this rely on public support, and every contribution helps provide food, care, and a safe home for rescued animals. ๐

From the moment you step inside, you're wrapped in the lively, traditional atmosphere of a classic Japanese Izakaya. The warm "Irasshaimase!" (Welcome!) greeting immediately sets the tone for an amazing night! ๐ฎ
They offer an impressive array of vegan-friendly dishes. The handmade soba noodles, crafted right before your eyes, are absolutely exquisite ๐ฅข. Every bite of the vegan sushi and the savory, perfectly grilled vegan skewers was a delight.
The tempura bowl is especially incredibleโso satisfying and beautifully presented ๐คโจ.
If you're looking to experience the heart of Japanese dining culture in a conscious and delicious way, I highly recommend checking out this place. A must-visit when you're in Tokyo!

I didnโt expect to have this much fun making sushi!!! ๐ฃ
Even after almost 12 years of living in Japan, I learned new things, like how to properly make nigiri, the correct way to eat it, and how to roll and cut maki sushi correctly.
Turns out Iโve been doing it wrong all these years ๐
What makes JIN Asakusa special is that itโs much more than just a sushi-making class. The experience combines authentic Japanese cuisine with samurai culture, making it a fun and memorable way to learn about Japanese traditions in the heart of Asakusa.
I highly recommend it if youโre looking for a unique cultural experience in Tokyo!

In larger supermarkets like Ito Yokado or Aeon Mall, you can often find a โhealthyโ section with some of the products being ready-made vegan options like curry, sauces, and more.
Your chances of finding vegan (certified) products increase in eco, organic, or higher-end supermarkets (but prices tend to be higher as well.)
๐กLook for labels like ใใดใฃใผใฌใณใใใใผใฌใณใใใใฉใณใใใผในใ or ใๅ็ฉๆงไธไฝฟ็จใ to help identify vegan products. However, always double-check the ingredients, as โplant-basedโ products can still contain animal-derived ingredients.
โ๏ธSome of the accidentally vegan products may include secondary ingredients that arenโt fully vegan, such as sugar. In Japan, sugar is sometimes processed using bone char, so the only way to be certain is to contact the manufacturer directly. This can also apply to some plant-based products.

Since my friend checked with Kappa Maki, I decided to check with some of the other big sushi chains in Japan as well, feeling hopefulโฆ
Unfortunately, the replies were not very positive, as the chains did not provide information beyond their allergen lists.
๐๐ป Kappa Sushi ใใฃใฑๅฏฟๅธ:
The sushi chain Kappa Sushi has recently confirmed that their Inari zushi and their Natto-sushi donโt contain animal ingredients. Other items you can order: Kappa-maki (cucumber), French fries and Adzuki-bean dango.
๐๐ป Kura Sushi ใใๅฏฟๅธ
The sushi chain Kura Sushi has only confirmed that their Pineapple and Apple Mango fruit dessert is free of animal-ingredients. I have checked the allergens and there are no allergens listed for their cucumber maki, Takuan maki, Natto maki and Inari zushi. However, there is the chance that the latter three do contain katsuo fish extract, which doesnโt have to be labelled as an allergen.
๐๐ป Hama sushi ใฏใพๅฏฟๅธ
Hama sushi is not sharing any further ingredients, so I would assume only the cucumber maki is potentially vegan (after checking their allergen chart).
๐๐ป Sushiro ในใทใญใผ
Sushiro confirms that none of their sushi are vegan, as they use fish extract-vinegar for their riceโฆ
Do you know any other sushi chains that have potentially vegan sushi? Let me know in the comments below!
