Kazuaki Koseki photographs the Himebotaru, a species of firefly native to Japan, in the forests of Yamagata. Unlike other species, these fireflies emit light in bursts. Looking back on those busy and memorable weeks, I wrote a note reflecting on the exhibition and expressing my gratitude to the gallery, everyone who visited the show, and the collectors who welcomed these works into their lives.
Reaching this point is something I could never have imagined when I first began my journey in photography, and I feel deeply grateful.
This is not an ending, but the beginning of another chapter.

慌ただしかった会期を振り返りながら、今回の展示を通して感じたことや、ギャラリー、会場に足を運んでくださった方々、作品を迎え入れてくださったコレクターの皆さまへの感謝について、noteに綴りました。
活動を始めた頃には想像もしなかった場所まで辿り着くことができたことに、改めて深い感謝を感じています。

I found a beautiful rowan tree.
A single firefly came from far away, blinking repeatedly.
Then it circles the tree and leaves again.

In the program, I spoke about the passage of time in Matsushima —
how rocks continue to erode, and how pine trees slowly pass through generations over long periods of time.
At the end of the episode, 川瀬敏郎 spoke about how arranging pine branches is “to capture nature itself.”
Those words remained with me deeply.
I was also very moved by the calligraphic title “Zekkei” (“Spectacular Scenery”) by 紫舟.
I am not searching for scenery that is simply beautiful or visually impressive.
Yet when I spend time with things that have lived through long spans of nature’s time,
there are moments when I feel as though I can hear something that exists before words.
I hope to continue searching for my own sense of “Zekkei.”
NHK “Bi no Tsubo File 659 — Pine Trees Reflecting the Spirit of Japan”
先日出演した、NHK「美の壺 File659 日本の心を映す 松」。
松島で撮影した風景や、番組内で使用された作品を少しだけ。
収録では、岩が削られ続けること、
そして松が、ゆっくりと世代をつないでいく時間についてお話ししました。
番組の最後には、川瀬敏郎さんが
「松をいけることは自然そのものを写し取ること」
と語られていて、とても印象に残っています。
また、紫舟さんによる題字「絶景」の書も、とても美しく、記憶に残るものでした。
私は、ただ美しい景色を求めて作品をつくっているわけではありません。
けれど自然の中で、長い時間を生きるものたちと向き合っていると、
時折、言葉になる前の何かが聞こえてくるような瞬間があります。
そんな、自分なりの「絶景」を、これからも探し続けていきたいと思います。

'Summer Fairies — Luminous Fireflies & the Climate Crisis'
Over eight years, Koseki has documented the luminous fireflies of Japan, translating their twinkling flight paths into awe-inspiring photographs, and sounding the alarm about the danger to these creatures caused by human intervention and the climate crisis.
Confronting the darkest depths of the nocturnal forest, Kazuaki Koseki experienced an awe-inspiring image that he just couldn’t shake. As if painted with light, the forest transformed, enchanted by the twinkling flight paths of the ‘himebotaru,’ a firefly endemic to Japan. For eight years, he has returned to the forest of the Yamagata prefecture in the Tōhoku region during the summer to observe the ecology of the species and try to translate what he first saw into photographs.
Summer Fairies is an offering born of devotion and hard-earned skill that seeks to share the beauty of the firefly with the world. Faced with increasing threats caused by human activity and climate change, the firefly is one of many living things at risk in these unstable times. Koseki’s records of these quiet and sublime nocturnal happenings are charged with a deep love for his luminous “neighbors,” speaking to his “happiness of living in a world that is irreplaceable.”
