Es considerado como un icono y una de las obras de arte más importantes del siglo XX. En él se refleja los terribles sufrimientos que la guerra 💥deja sobre los seres humanos.
Fue encargado por el gobierno de la Segunda República para ser expuesto en el pabellón español de la Exposición Universal de París de 1937, con el fin de atraer al público hacia la causa republicana y los estragos que estaba causando la Guerra Civil española.
Tras la dictadura en España, Picasso decidió que la obra fuera custodiada por el MoMA, hasta que regresara la democracia. Así pues, en 1981 la obra llegó a España, expuesta en el Casón del Buen Retiro (Museo del Prado) y desde 1992 se conserva en el Museo Reina Sofía de Madrid.
