And not every patient wants to go through multiple surgeries, long healing times, and aggressive treatment.
This patient was referred by her general dentist because the implant on tooth 8 was in a compromised position, creating an unaesthetic appearance of the gums (“pink esthetics”) and recession on the neighboring tooth 9.
One option could have been:
• Removing the implant
• Rebuilding the bone
• Performing several grafting surgeries
• Starting over with a very long treatment process
While that may sometimes be the ideal solution, it also comes with more pain, cost, recovery time, and morbidity for the patient.
After carefully evaluating the case, I decided on a more conservative approach focused on improving the gums and soft tissue instead of removing the implant.
A soft tissue graft was performed to:
• Improve the gum contour around the implant
• Treat the recession on the adjacent tooth
• Increase tissue thickness (“phenotype”)
• Improve long-term tissue health and stability
A new temporary crown was also designed to help shape and support the gums during healing.
The final crowns were completed by the referring general dentist. Could the “white esthetics” (the teeth themselves) still be improved further? Yes. But dentistry is not always about chasing perfection at all costs.
Sometimes the best treatment is the one that improves health, confidence, stability, and esthetics while minimizing unnecessary surgeries for the patient.
This is the power of thoughtful, interdisciplinary dentistry.
