Congratulations to The Magnificent Banyan and the Green Tong Lau by award-winning author Stephanie Ellen Sy and illustrator Ishita Jain for receiving its first starred review! This modern fable follows the residents of a Hong Kong apartment whose lives are seemingly disrupted when a resilient banyan tree begins to grow along the building’s walls. 🌳💚💙

Painting big on location is unwieldy and awkward but this was also not big enough!!!! One day I’ll be like Hockney and pack some sandwiches and figure out a sturdy easel system and walk up a hill and paint away in the winds:p
Till then, you will find me on all fours, making sure my paper doesn’t fly away:p
Painting Magnolias and Kwanzan cherries. Me and tree for scale:) Beautiful BBG day with and

Last May I sent my publisher a giant zipped folder of over 400 files and then suddenly it was quiet for a While. To see that folder turn into something that I can touch, feel, smell, snuggle on my couch with, put a bookmark in, carry in the subway, flip the damn pages...it is all a THRILLLLL!!
When I moved to NYC, the land of skyscrapers from Delhi in 2018, I was perpetually homesick and found solace in the parks and green spaces that provided a break from the chaos of the city. I was curious about people’s relationships with plants and the greenspaces that surround them. In ‘Searching for Sunshine’, I interviewed and drew some incredible humans in NYC who work with plants—botanists, foragers, herbalists, entomologists, tree pruners, florists—and asked them about their experiences of working with the natural world and why it brings meaning to their lives.
Searching for Sunshine began as my thesis project with the bestest, life changing as my mentor and is now being published by
