The so-called “bachelor tax” in Japan is… not a bachelor tax. It’s not even a tax.

It’s an additional contribution added to public health insurance premiums, and EVERYONE pays it—singles, married couples, parents and people without children.

You can absolutely debate whether it’s good policy, of course! But calling it a “bachelor tax” makes it sound like Japan is specifically targeting unmarried people, which simply isn’t true.

Listen, not every public expense benefits us directly, which is kind of the point of living in a society.
With Tropical Storm Jangmi (Typhoon No.6) on the way, I need everyone to be informed and ready!! Please know where your closest evacuation site is and have an emergency kit ready!! Be informed and please please please stay safe!!!!!
Japan says it wants more children.

Yet when one of the country’s few female mayors, Shoko Kawata, announces she’s taking time off to give birth, she faces criticism for becoming pregnant while in office????

And I can’t help but wonder, how often are male politicians asked whether having a child is compatible with their job????? How often are fathers expected to justify starting a family while holding public office????
The Sanseito has disciplined 10 of its members after they were found to be involved in a so-called 国保逃れ scheme, which is using a loophole to reduce National Health Insurance payments.

Seven local assembly members were asked to leave the party, one was reprimanded, one (ONE!!!!!) was expelled, and another was asked to leave for encouraging it.

Sure, this wasn’t immigration fraud. But for a party that often talks about people (ahem, immigrants) exploiting public systems, they certainly seem to have no problems doing it themselves. How convenient.
Lawful immigrants who have built their lives here, opened businesses, hired people, paid taxes… are being told to leave in 30 days.

Japan recently tightened its rules for the Business Manager visa, and this change has been devastating and with real consequences for people who have done nothing wrong. Going from a 5M capital requirement to 30M (6x!!) is cruel and unjustifiable—especially when it’s so sudden so no one was allowed to prepare! Now, they’re bent faced with impossible decisions. Either close their business, forcefully separate from their families, or risk overstaying in order to obtain a special permission to stay.

This is so cruel, it’s taken me days to sit with this reality in order to talk about it.
Nearly half of foreign residents surveyed in Japan said they’ve experienced some form of discrimination in everyday life.

The most common issue was housing discrimination, followed by discrimination at work and while job hunting. Many respondents also reported seeing or experiencing hate speech—most commonly online (not shocking).

At the same time, 91% said they were satisfied living in Japan overall, citing safety, cleanliness, and daily life compatibilities.

Ley this be reminder that life in Japan is often more complicated than what we see online.
Japan is about to get even more expensive for families.

Major companies like Daio Paper Corporation and Unicharm Corporation are raising prices on diapers, sanitary pads, toilet paper, tissues, and other daily essentials because of rising material costs linked to tensions in the Middle East.

Some companies are also changing packaging to reduce ink use—including black-and-white packaging and redesigned labels.

When global oil-related costs rise, it doesn’t just affect gasoline. It affects every single one of us.
Hi, I’m Sachiko. I’m half Japanese, half German, but I grew up in Barcelona and now live in Tokyo. I talk about motherhood in Japan and the social issues that come with it, as well as the reality of daily life here beyond the stereotypes.

After six years of infertility treatments, IVF, and ICSI, I became a mom to a baby girl who just turned one (AAAHH💕). Motherhood shapes a lot of what I share, but so does my frustration with the myths about Japan that always go viral on social media.
Let’s talk about vaccines in Japan—when do we begin, and what are they?

#japan #japanesehealthcare #vaccines #antivaxx
To be fair, Japan COULD do better, it just chooses not to.
