My youngest daughter made her high school kendo debut.
Back in junior high, her team rarely had enough members to field a full five-person squad, so she seemed genuinely happy just to be part of a complete team. And with everyone wearing matching white uniforms, her excitement was through the roof.
Armed with handmade good-luck charms prepared by their team manager, they headed into the match. Unfortunately, they came up short, but I’m sure it was a valuable experience.
Enjoy your kendo club life and make lots of great memories with your teammates!

先日のアジア大会で審判やってた台湾の友達からもらった手拭いで稽古。

Kendo practice today.
I trained using a tenugui that I received from a friend from Taiwan who served as a referee at the recent Asia-Oceania Championships.
The weather is getting hotter, and the sweat is pouring off me like a waterfall. At this rate, I might dry up and shrivel away.
(No, I probably won’t.)

Today’s practice reflection:
“After watching the 1st Asia-Oceania Kendo Championships up close, I felt like I had become a little stronger myself. Then I realized I hadn’t improved even a tiny bit.”
A guy who hadn’t been to practice in a while showed up, so it was a lively and enjoyable session.
And of course, I used this tenugui.

At the 1st Asia-Oceania Kendo Championships held in Tokyo the other day, one of the most memorable matches in the Men's Team Competition was between China's taisho, Wu, and Japan's Yuya Takenouchi.
Wu struck first with a superb men attack against Takenouchi. Takenouchi later came back to win the match with techniques including the tsuki shown in this photo, but it was a bout that truly demonstrated the growing strength of Chinese kendo.

Hinamatsuri on March 3rd finished peacefully… or so I thought.
Hinamatsuri, also known as Girls’ Day, is a traditional Japanese celebration where families display ornamental dolls and pray for the health and happiness of their daughters.
But then I noticed the lady-in-waiting in the middle was wearing a kendo men mask, and the old gentleman below was busy taking care of his shinai. Another one almost fainted after smelling a pair of kote.
What a fun Hinamatsuri. 🎎
